The electric in this place kind of blows since the builiding is not that modern (mostly 2 prong plugs)......

Every time I turn on the air conditioner, all the lights start dimming. The other day, I plugged in a 10,000 btu air conditioner and it made the whole place dim alot, so i turned it off....then my g/f comes in and turns it back on and poof....no electricty through out the whole apartment except on one outlet.
We got a smaller ( I think around 8,000)BTU air conditiomer, which worked fine. But, in the bedroom, we plugged in an even smaller air conditioner (6,200 btu) it the thing barely runs. When we turn it on, you cannot tell the difference between hi and low and it shakes badly....

Here is the kicker, last night my g/f uses the microwave in the apt for the first time. She turn it on and the TV just turns on, then it turns off. It keeps turning on and off for no reason, even with the microwave off. Is my 27 in baby broken? Did my TV get a surge that killed it? It stills turns on (but it turns on by itself and off by itself).

i'd complain to the landlord a bit. not much, just in passing convo. just see if he knows about it, maybe he can do something but like you said, it's an older place so who knows.

edit: oh and about the TV... hmm. hope she's ok

sorry, i unintentially LOLed when I read about your TV going haywire. Its not really funny because its not cheap to replace. Good luck, I would ask your landlord about it. Sounds like you have old low current circuits.

Don't worry, i found it funny, too (my g/f was pissed about it though). The place is pretty old, and i expected it to have some low current circuitry, but no so low that a 6,200 BTU air conditioner would struggle (it's weird that the 8,000 btu doesn't struggle). From what the realtor told me (after I signed the lease:Disgust;) the landlord is kind of stingy. Other than that, I love the apt (aside form the fact it is on the 4th floor), but i guess it is the price i pay for living in the Back Bay.

ANyone know anything about changing my 2 prong to three porng? Will that a help or do i actually have to change the whole wiring in my apt to see a difference? I am not liking these Three to 2 prong adapters. They scare me because the are always loose.

Don't you hate it when people brag about their old houses? They're like, "its a 100 years old, its got so much history" and I'm thinking "If by history, you mean bad insulation, foundation problems and faulty wiring, then oh yeah its got lots of that."

I lived in an apartment that was a converted 100 year old schoolhouse for two years. It was a sh|t hole, and there weren't even any damn ghosts in it so it a boring sh|thole.

I know what you are talking about it. I do not get it either. my g/f loves the old style, but I am more of a modern person and i wanted central AC dammit! I am surprised I did notice the two porongs when i saw the apt, but i was probably thinking, "Dam, I am gonna be late for work....wow this apt is huge!".

three prong is basicly one extra for grounding... very important for kitchen appliances
tvs on the other hand dont use/need/want grounding so they are always two prong

best would be to rewire the whole apartment

And since thats the landlords job, we all know that won't ever happen.

I knew a girl that lived in a place like that, but it was odd because the common area had a basketball-court style wooden floor. And the ceilings were ridiculously high, they had to have been twenty feet or more.

Ceilings were pretty high in this place too. My main complaint was that it was insulated about as well as a fvcking barn. Also, everything was uneven...because the foundation was sh|t.
