I'm a computer engineering major and I am taking this EE class thats totally kicking my ass. The final is in a few days and it looks like I am going to get "pwnd" by it. The class is made up of 35% lab/hw, %30 quizes, %35 final. I aced the lab/hw part, and fvcked up the quizes beyond recognition. So I am destined to get an F or perhaps a D in the course. Unless I pull out some christmas miracle I will have to retake the class - So do I study for the final as hard as I can and pull for that miracle (while not studying as hard for 3 other finals), or should I focus on the 3 I can do well on and screw this class (already signed up for it next quarter...)?

Well, if you study now and don't pull off the miracle, at least it will be easier when you retake it.

yeah, study a bunch for it...teachers usually dont want to fail people, and if you do decent on the final they might be willing to let it slide cause you did well on the labs/hw. even if you dont take it to focus on your other exams your gpa will be kicked in the nuts from an F

Ehhh, I'm screwed in my classes too

I got a 31/100 on one of my midterms. The median was a 68 or so.

Midterm 2 I got a 69 when the median was a 63. I don't know. I think I'm pretty screwed for that class too

yep. That, and you can ask the prof to pass you if you end up with around 48 or 49.

I'm also screwed for a class, I am taking the final tomorrow and I am going to talk to the instructor and see what I can do.

:crosses fingers;

It just so happend that it was one of those classes where the prof doesn't care much for deadlines and returns a bunch of grades after the drop deadline...I need a C- to take the next class in the series anyway, so I should learn this stuff. I guess I'll take a good stab at it and see where it gets me, otherwise, just my luck I already have it on my list for next quarter. Gpa won't be too ****** since when I retake the class the bad grade will be replaced...

50 is passing for you? Holy crap. We had to get 70.

Immediately see the professor privately and tell him about your situation.

Tell him that you enjoy the class but found it challenging, and were looking for his input on how you can do better so as you don't end up repeating it because at this point you'll be glad to get out of it with a pass. Ask him what topics are coming up so you can spend extra time prepping yourself ahead of time (nothing wrong with this at all).

Aside from gathering potentially useful study data, you've now made a hugely positive impression to him and let him know that if he fudges things a little to pull you a pass, it's good karma for him. Works well in cases where this is needed.

Yea, ditto. 70% and no curve on the grades either. Usually little to no extra credit either. Example is my Community Health Nursing, 3 test(including final) are 75% of the grade. The other 25% is/was a research paper(ours was 33 pages minus title page and references). The only extra credit in the class was taking this hard as balls standardized test and it got your 5% towards your final exam grade. Considering the mean score of her tests hover around 70%, that 5% is a God send.

And make sure you discuss things privately with your prof, see if he/she can get you any help for the final. Tho it might seem like desperation, you wont know til you ask/try.

well that's good news... you're lucky your school replaces old grades if you retake the class.
just screw it and focus on the three classes you actually have a shot at.

there's nothing worse than barely passing a prereq just so you can move on to the next class in the curriculum. if your fundamentals are weak you'll regret it big time when you take more advanced courses.

Its relative. I got a 71 average last semester and that put me in the top half of the class, so having 1/2 class fail means there's something wrong with the course, not the students.

I had one class in 2nd year where I put in absurd amounts of time into studying (and I went to all the lectures) and I barely squeeked by with a 51%.
