So I made the mistake of buying an iTrip

What a piece of junk. The transmission is incredibly fuzzy, even on the best stations I could find. It only seems to want to turn on about 40% of the time (I'm always having to do a soft reset and re-program the station). Ridculous.

Obviously, I'm still looking for a way to play my iPod (20gb) in the car. I drive a 95 Pontiac Grand Prix, so I basically have a tape deck and the cigarette lighter to work with (since the FM one was a bust). Anyone have any experience with these? I saw one that plugs into the tape deck, but it got mixed reviews (people complained of shoddy sound quality, which is exactly my gripe with the iTrip).

Thoughts?

I had the same problem... no FM transmitter ever gave me good, reliable reception.

I was suprised how much better my Ipod sounded when using a 10-year old Sony tape cassette adapter.

Mind you-- it's not as good as it should be... but it does sound pretty decent.

Go to walmart and get the Scosche FM transmitter from the car section. It's not going to be in the ipod accessories section. Don't get the version with the built in charger (this one is $24). The one you want is going to be $18. It's better than any "ipod" designed transmitter.

Griffin RoadTrip has worked perfectly for me. Live just south of Minneapolis/St. Paul so there aren't really any open stations, but the RoadTrip overpowers them and gives me clear sound. I had an iTrip first and I'd agree, total crap. Advantage of the RoadTrip is that it is powered directly from one of the cig lighters...better power/transmit output than the iTrip...plus it charges my iPod.

Did you get the dock connector version? Yes, that is pure crap.

Get the iTrip that mounts on the top, without the LCD. It's the bomb, yo.

I checked walmart.com and they don't have it but target does. Here is a pic of it. I'd go check your local walmart.

And what the hell do we do if we don't live in 1988 and no longer have a TAPE DECK.

Buy a new head unit with a stereo line input????????

the monster icar gave me good reception... much much better than an itrip (which i had before). i will actually be putting mine up for sale pretty soon if you are interested.

The iTrip that mounts on top sucked pretty bad for me... nothings worse then spending a good hour of your road time flipping between two different station settings on the iTrip trying to see which one has less static...

No, that's the one that sucks. At least that's the one that I have that I am very dissatisfied with.

The tape deck option works okay. We use that in my wife's car and sound quality isn't very good. Still, it's quite a bit better than any FM transmitter.

In my car I bought a head unit that will accept an iPod controller (which I had to buy separately of course). This is by far the best option. Not only do you lose the crappy factory head unit but the iPod controller will charge your iPod and allow you to control the iPod with a remote or through the HU's buttons/knobs. Some of these are a bit quirky in their functionality but they sound the best by far.

I spent about $350 on my setup which I ordered from Crutchfield. I installed it myself in about 1 hour. Since I already had a Pioneer deck in my car all I had to do was unplug the wiring harness, plug in my new receiver and wire in the hot lead and ground to the iPod control unit and run the iPod cable into my glove box.
