Are these things neat? I don't read too much so I thought I'd give it to my brother for christmas who reads all the time.
 
congrats. im thinking of giving one to my wife as an xmas present. I wonder if you can rent books on it from public libraries

Books that are rented from the public library are in epub format. Kindle's do not support this format. They can be converted to work on the Kindle, but there is a DRM issue.

if you checked out an ebooks from the library, do you have a due date like a reg. book?

Yea ebooks have definitely went up in price since I bought mine (i bought mine in April 2010). Nearly all the new releases were at $9.99, while their hardcover variants were ~$17.

Today, most new release ebooks on amazon are $14.99. In some cases it's actually cheaper for the hardcover. I've noticed that every other book (that has a paperback already) is usually $10 now.

It sucks, but I still like it for the convenience. I'm not going to rebuy any books that I already own any time soon though.

are these things good for adults with poor vision? my father likes reading but his eyesight is getting worse and worse. if the screen can be magnified a lot one of these things might be perfect.

Yea, you can ramp up the text size quite nicely, you just have to do a helluva lot more page turning.
 
bought one for wifes bday, used it for a while while she was finishing up some analog books. i really liked it, and am hoping to get one as a bday or xmas gift myself.
 
Baen.com has a library of free older SF & fantasy eBooks in kindle and other reader formats. They also sell new eBooks DRM-free for $6, including ones that are currently out in hardcover.

I have the older model Kindle (2.0) and am happy with it. It's been very nice adding to my library while saving a little money and not needing any more closet space for the books.

I am too. I understand they don't work with eBooks from libraries, but there is a program you can use to convert them.
 
I have the Kindle app on my iPad. It's neat but I still prefer reading paper books. Just a better experience IMO. I find eBooks aren't cost effective either. Newspapers are pretty neat though on those devices.

You can thank Apple's iPad and their deals with the publishers for this. 🙁 There is no reason in the world why an ebook should cost the same or more than a printed version, it drives people in droves to piracy.

I've had a Nook since August. I went with them instead of the kindle because of the DRM issues and also because I was able to find a slew of epub books for free online. At Barnes and Nobles website they give away a free complete new novel every Friday. I have about 40 books on my Nook right now. I am an avid reader and love this thing. Anyone who reads a lot will definitely appreciate an e-reader.

As said above, there are free open source programs out there that can convert practically any book into any format on an e-reader. I can't think of the one I had, but I was able to convert word docs into epub.
