So I just watched Syriana...

I am so confused 😕

Why'd the new Emir's brother have to be killed? Why was he killed by the US? Why'd Clooney's character run him down, only to just freaking stand there? I thought he was going to warn the guy about the assassination, but how'd Clooney find out, and why'd he just stand there like a freakin' idiot and get blown up too?

Someone please un-pretzel my brain 😕

He was killed because he wasn't going to be a good business partner with the US. Clooney found out, but I don't think he knew how the assasination would take place.

Because he wanted to change thing/modernize.
US is in bed with the existing regime.
Was trying to warn him, got there, realized how crazy everything was or heard missle and realized it was all too late.
Can't remember how Clooney found out, but I'm sure they covered that.

Okay, I can understand that. However, if he isn't Emir, what does it matter? His brother'd become king so it's not like he'd have a lot of power to control international business with his country, would he? Or did I miss something about that too?

can some give me 120 minutes (or however long that POS movie was) back?

there were a few threads on this movie already so you can get the general consesus for and against the movie there...

If I recall, the older brother was going to stage a coup or something.

he was about to stage a coup against his brother, take power and try and carry out his vision. This was deemed unfavourable to the US, so he was killed.

Clooney tried to warn him, hence why he was there.

this was the best movie of the last several years. Amazing doesn't begin to describe it.

Those who walked into this movie expecting to be "entertained" undoubtedly were disappointed. Syriana is thought provoking, and maybe you have to watch it a second time to appreciate everything. I found it a fascinating picture of the world we live in.

Yeah, that's what I figured about half way through the movie when there wasn't any car chases, naked chicks, or fire fights. I'm going to watch it again later -probably tomorrow night. I didn't pick up on the plans for a coup, but we'll see. From what I understand from what I saw, it's a great movie.

Don't know if it's "the best" - but I'd put it pretty damn high on my list, I loved this movie and need to watch it again. Reminds me of The Insider in terms of just a fierce, intellectual drama.

I believe Clooney tried to "take one for the team" and wtfpwn the assasination. (team = innocent and good people)

He just misjudged how much we love oil here in our 12mpg trucks.

So they took the opportunity (they = our gas supply securers / CIA) to wax all of them and make it look like a suicide bombing based on the fact that Clooney attempted kill that same guy he now tries to save.

Actually a quite nice uber reflex on his co-worker to have that work out in US interests.

Then again, nobody actually says this is what the storyline was all about. I am just making my own interpretations publicly known.

I think a lot of it was also that many people thought it was "anti-american". Of course, it didn't try to be pro- or anti- anything, just giving people a picture....
