$45/year.

I don't know what to say. The stuff they stock is usually a little cheaper than regular retailers but they don't have much of a selection. I was really disappointed with the electronics/computers/houseware/appliances selection. I needed some cheap speakers for my laptop, and they didn't have any! So I proceed to get myself a Mr.Coffee for early mornings and they had just 1 model. Meh. I guess its still worth it for those times when Rossman and others post deals for Costco but I don't I'll spend enough money on groceries in a year to make up for the $45 in savings :p

So let this be a headsup for you all.

You can buy clothes and other stuff as well. The ready-made food is also quite good.

Costco isn't really about the electronics. The real savings come when you do most of your shopping there as you get the bulk discount. Also a much bigger savings if you have a family.

I thought it was lifetime return

It may be one year officially, but that doesn't stop them from making it lifetime. When my uncle passed away, we returned a bunch of stuff that he had just sitting around for more than a year.

it isn't about selection, who told you it was?

it is about large volumes of stuff

giant bottles of laundry detergent for families and huge bags of pasta etc, etc

Yeah, the best deals are when they have large packages of small packages of things. Like the 50 bags of corn nuts packs they sometimes have. Those are like 1/4 the cost per unit of the small ones, and they don't go bad.

Well, I got 2 huge cases of Perrier/S.Pellegrino for cheap! I think I saved about $4 on those alone. Considering I go through a 12 .75L bottle case in 4 days, that alone is worth it... I guess I'll use it for water and food :)

Also don't forget the gas savings, they may not always have the absolute cheapest but it comes close and they are consistent.

I live by myself so I generally only take advantage of certain things at costco but it's still worth the 45 bucks a year for me. The meat section at Costco is great, higher quality and lower cost than anything I can get at the local grocery stores unless they have an exceptional sale going on. I always buy my laundry detergent there which usually saves me close to 5 bucks for a comparable sized one at the grocery store, some of the deals on clothes, books & CD's are nice too. My problem is that even if I go in for one or two specific things I usually make a couple of impulse buys and for the life of me can't seem to get out of there without spending at least $100.

I thought lifetime was the official part? I'm not a member but might be joining to buy an HDTV, and if it's officially only a year, i might change my mind. If it was lifetime (at least 2-3 years if the HDTV broke) that's fine. I can't find their return policy in writing anywhere. Any help?

meh, I never see a savings on soda here... 24 pack is like $6... which is the same as if i bought it on sale at giant, which is 5 minutes away instead of 15, and no membership fees.

however, lots of stuff is usually cheaper.. milk is one thing. 10 pack of tomato sauce rules (i make lots of pasta/chilli.. heh. It's good for various things... but I think the membership fees are insane. we have a membership through family :)
