So I just registered my car 9 months late in CA

I thought you were supposed to get charged penalties for registering late? Anyway it was a lot cheaper than I thought. I think someone told me a long time ago that it costs a lot of money to register a out of state car in CA, but it didnt which was a nice surprise.

How would they know when you moved there? I think you'd be charge penalties if you renew your registration late, or if you have expired temporary registration, but if your car was registered in another state I'd think you'd have to get a ticket from a cop to be penalized.

It used to. The Governator did away with that ridiculous revenue generating mechanism years ago (actually, Joe aka "Grey" Davis did away with it but he was going to reinstate it after he plunged the state into near bankruptcy).
