So I just ordered my new SSD- OCZ Agility

Along with Win7 pro 64bit OEM. So, I am certain to get an Agility that comes stock with the older firmware (no TRIM) how do I go about installation? Do I need to format and install Windows as usual, then once everything is up and running follow the Steps to flashing Firmware 1.4 on OCZ's forum then reinstall OS again or can I flash the new Firmware before I even install the OS for the first time?

Thanks !

Where did you buy it from. Mine came with 1.4 already on it.

I live in Australia so I've ordered it locally and I doubt the stock gets refreshed as fast as say Newegg so this leads me to assume it probably won't come with 1.4 on it- but you never know 🙂.

You should be able to install the firmware without even installing the OS, which is what I would do.

Thanks, I assume it's like flashing the BIOS on a motherboard which doesn;t require you to enter any OS.

on my OCZ Vertex, the firmware upgrade to v1.4 was a iso image. It allowed me to upgrade the firmware with no OS installed in my rig.

This was taken literally straight after I formated and installed Win7 Pro 64 in AHCI mode.

When my Agility arrived it was neatly packed and had the 1.3 firmware on it. After following the instructions to update via a USB (best/ eaisiest method IMO) I was on the 1.4 TRIM enabled firmware. Do these results look in line to how my SSD should be performing? I'll know more once I load up all my apps and a few games etc as to how it performs, stay tuned 🙂.

Nice stuff, looks good to me.

I suppose i really should update my firmware (i'm still on 1.3).

Here's my current numbers (73 GB filled); haven't run Wiper since i got the HDD.

You should check out Anand's newest review. Indilinx drives win some benchmarks, Intel wins others.

Honestly for desktop use, they're just as fast as each other.

+1.

Even the worst SSDs (but of course, you won't be buying them) beats the fastest harddisks in a lot of scenarios (but then again, even the worst SSDs are still expensive)

For day to day use, even just a moderately decent SSD will be far and beyond the performance of a HDD, which is why most reviewers almost swear by the line "once you go SSD, you won't go back to HDD".

I don't have personal experience (so anybody reading this can just take it with a grain of salt - I provide no warranty on your would-be SSD experience 😀 ), but not for lack of trying - from where I am (outside US, different continent), these things are not only rare (not even a single brick-and-mortar PC shop here has them - even though they've got new stuff like the 5xxx listed already) but would also probably be much more expensive even if they were available. I rejoiced initially when I saw the $89 Kingston SSD review in a different site, but realized it was the price after rebate, which will never be applicable here.

Oh well. Maybe the third generation of SSDs will be the ones that will be available mainstream here, until then I can only dream of the SSD benefits such as everything just "feeling smooth and responsive".

I think I've been brainwashed by overly-enthusiastic SSD reviewers that I now often look at my PC case (in the general direction of my HDD) and almost hear myself saying "tsk tsk, HDD, you fail me" everytime file I/O seems to slowdown my PC
