Live here in Canton, OH on a dense one way street. Backing up in the dark. Thought I had enough clearness. But my neighbors damn car was parked far off the curb my right fender grazed his driver side door. There is no body damage or dents or anything; just paint on paint contact. A streak on the door panel. On my car is not that bad, on his car is more obvious.

So, not sure if I should be pissed. His car was far off the curb on a poorly lit street. Thinking about just keeping my mouth shut as it prob not worth the aggravation it would take if I asked him to pay for body work on my right side.

Thoughts.

If anything, you pay for his damage. Not the other way around! Are you a ______?

Far off the curb or not, if he's not parked illegally I think you might be liable.

I would inform him as well. Trying to hide it isnt going to solve any problems. Telling him that his illegally parked vehicle got dinged just might.

I had a similar scenario (although the damage was worse) and the guy got pissed and call the police. He was REALLY pissed when he got a ticket for illegal parking.

He never parked there again. Kind of a shame since I needed a new taillight anyhow.

I would tell the neighbor too. I would also blame myself for hitting the car, and not the person that owns it, but my sense of personal responsibility is a bit old fashioned.

I doubt it. I once ran on a stop sign because a UPS truck was parked in front of it and I couldn't see it. I still got ticketed for running a stop sign. I was pretty angry about that. Took it to court and everything. :(

Two wrongs don't make a right. Go tell your neighbor. Think about how angry you would be if someone scraped your car and ran off.

Get pictures.. if he's more than 18" from the curb, you may have a case, if not..... too bad

Well the front end might be that far out, but the rear is definitely 8" or less. Hes parked at an angle.

Even if he parked in the middle of the road, you don't have the right to hit his car. You are at fault.

Yeah....Honestly for a bit there I thought it might of been his fault. But the more I think about it the worse I feel. What I'll do tomorrow morning is take a bunch of pictures (hopefully the guy is still there and not taken off for work), just in case. After work I will tell him straight up it was an accident, I'm sorry and lets figure out a way to get your door fixed.

A nice expensive way to end a genuinely crappy day...... How much would it cost to fix a indentation mark the size of a thumb on a door? Its a 92 BMW sedan.

This Bites.

Exactly! I saw a People's Court episode one day dealing with something similar. The judge pretty much said no matter how the neighbor parks his car, you cant hit it.

Go leave a note on his car right now with your contact information. Take a picture or two with flash tonight as well. It shouldn't cost that much, but you can use your liability insurance if it's more than you can afford.

With the car being that age, he might do anything between let you off the hook completely, or charge you a reasonable cash settlement. He might not even want it fixed. The important thing is that you be the man and go talk to him. This is not a serious problem, but it might turn into one, if you do nothing.

Character is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.
The only question now is what sort of character are you?

Shens.

Even on ATOT there can't possibly be anyone juvenile and pathetic enough to think that the owner of a parked car would pay for the damage of the person who rammed it. That just can't be possible, if you were that monumentally stupid you would not be able to turn on a computer.

If that 92 BMW sedan was mine I probably wouldn't care... but cars are simply a means of conveyance to me. MY 2 year old car has picked up several dings in an around my apartment building... big ****** deal.

I flinched a little when I noticed the first ding... after that, I don't even care.

Happened to me. Somehow I didn't see the car behind me in the thick fog and darkness of that night, and I dented their bumper pretty bad. I didn't know whos car it was at the time, but I went and looked for the owner, and it turned out it belonged to a friend of mine. Interestingly enough, my car only had a tiny dent, and after buffing out the scratches, it's barely visible so I never got it repaired.

He could have been illegally double parked selling crack to a 4 year old and the accident would still be your fault.

Oh, and you just committed a hit and run.
