The last time I finished Fear 1 was back in 2007 so I decided to take it for another spin. It’s still a lot of fun and the graphics hold up very well for a six year old game. My favorite load-out is probably the penetrator (slot 1), particle weapon (slot 2) and repeating cannon (slot 3). Dual-pistols are also great and are totally viable to use throughout the entire game, unlike most games.

When I first played it in 2005 I ran it at 1152x864 with 16xAF, no AA, and disabled shadows on a Radeon X800XL and I pulled 73 FPS in the benchmark run. Now on my GTX480 I played it at 2560x1600 with 16xAF and 8xMSAA (with TrSS) at maximum detail levels (except soft shadows) and pulled 81 FPS. You have to love progress.

The third installment is almost upon us and I hope it’s more like the first game rather than the sequel. The sequel just wasn’t as good in many respects.

I thought it was a great game too : p My only complaint was not enough enemy types, but the story/suspense kept me entertained to the end. Too bad none of the expansions/sequels lived up to it : ( I think a big part of it was not really know wtf was going on in the first and slowly figuring it out, which was lost in all the next ones.

Awesome game. And sadly lacking a sequel.

Of course I feel the same about AvP and NOLF and Tron and those are also Monolith games.
Weird, every other company loves to milk their franchises to death.

I liked the game too.
Really should install it again & see it w/ today's GPUs.

I haven't liked any of the sequels though.

FEAR is freaking awesome when it came out, it made jump out of my seat back in the day. I was happy that it ran well on 1280x1024 w/ my x850xt pe.

The only thing that stops me from replaying fear or fear two are the graphics, they're just dated. Great games though, can't wait for 3 :awe:.

I played Fear 1 on PC and Fear 2 on PS3, loved them both and looking forward to the next one!

It was decent... bought it for $60 included taxes back then (Canadian dollars that is, still, pricy, especially back then), it was nothing spectacular though, I guess I was expecting more, I never really got into those "horror" type games before, in FPS view or not, so I was curious and I tried, it wasn't "bad" mind you, I enjoyed it, the A.I in particular was certainly better than what you'd usually see in other games. I only finished it once and I uninstalled it, I never played it again ever since, and to be completely honest I never understood the story.

FEAR 3 will probably be on the same level of graphics as FEAR 2.

The graphics aren't as dated as some other games released around that time, it held up pretty well. It may have not been a Crysis, but it did put a strain on machines back in the day.
I just played through first & finished both expansions. Back in the day when it came out I beat it on first 3 difficulties, and was halfway through extreme difficulty before getting bored and moving on to something else. I haven't experienced or enjoyed many other intense firefights like the ones provided on extreme difficulty, they seem to have been ahead of the times when it came to the AI.
Since I still haven't built a new computer, I'm using same computer. Although not SLI like first times I played it. Was noticeable it was pushing my 4800 & 7900GTX 512, but rarely lagged at max settings. Oddly, only times there were no noticeable lag was outside of combat, but looked like it was the shadows bogging it down.
I want to play FEAR 2, but I know I won't be able to run that at max settings. :(
Just because it's an older game, is no reason to sleep on it, one of the best FPS games released around its' time, graphically, gameplay & story.

For the fourth time? Really?

You need to find another game to play. I mean granted, FEAR was good, but idk if it was that good lol.

I played FEAR 1 once and that was enough. Not that it was bad, it's just one of those I don't need to play again. I remember getting it on launch day and playing through it almost in one sitting, but it wasn't because it was short... I was just that into it. It was freshman year of college and it was during a 3 day weekend I think. Weather was terrible and I had nothing better to do, so I played the hell out of it and loved every minute of it. Too bad all the expansions and sequel couldn't come close.

Graphics are quite dated, but it still has some of the best squad AI I've seen yet. Those guys got the drop on me a number of times.

FEAR was a good game, plan on picking up FEAR 2 if I can get it for < $5 like I did FEAR.

FEAR was awesome, and IMO the graphics still hold up pretty well. There's just something awesome about the constant sparking, explosions, dust clouds, etc. in fight scenes in that game.

I wasn't able to finish FEAR -- the gameplay wasn't revolutionary and the story/plot didn't really pull me in.

I think I got to the asylum level before quitting. Is it worth giving the game another try?

I loved FEAR; one of my favorite games. I'd estimate I've finished it at least four times as well and had a blast each time.

I don't notice the "dated" graphics. I'm too busy trying different things each time I play.

Agreed.. sort of. By the time I got to the end of Fear 1, I just wanted it over. Fear 2 sucked balls and Fthreear or whatever the hell they're calling it looks lame IMO.

I'd give virtually anything to see a quality NOLF 3 though. :(

Hmmm, for one reason or another I never finished playing it. I wonder if it's worth picking up now.

I bought it for my brother for $5 a few months ago, he'd never played it. Then I gave it a runthrough again for old times sake. Still awesome. Still so damn disappointed in the expansions and sequels. F3AR looks like it's going to be crap too. The first one just got gunplay perfect, the feel, sound, tension...where'd the magic go?

I actually agree with OP - Fear 1 has actually aged very well graphically, meaning it's still very pleasant to look at unlike some other older games. Part of this is likely because of it's PC exclusivity... a true PC game made for PC gamers.

Also, it's one of the most satisfying FPSs ever made. "Satisfying" as in it just feels good to shoot your enemies, especially in slow-mo. Worth multiple play-throughs? I think so.

I liked fear for what it was. The ending was great, and it had a few really epic scenes. Scary too. But honestly it just got to be too repetitive for me.
