So I just bought Win XP Pro...

I think I can do remote desktop(what is it, how does it work, does ms at least compress the data before sending it? I'd imagine a powerful computer or maybe a multi cpu computer or one with a video card capable of encoding might be able to compress it before sending it out?), what else is different?

Agreed, waste of money now, unless you spent less than 40ish for it. You could have just spent time using the longhorn beta's until the final version.

i think pro just has more networking capabilities and software for servers or admins... nothing a home user would need

Longhorn probably wont make it out before 07. Anyways Pro allows for IIS to be installed and you can join it to domains.

Longhorn will be at least a year, and even then it's not like XP is going to go away any time soon.

Pro's most useful feature to me is Remote Desktop.

You also get a limited version of IIS if you want to set up a website off your home PC.

Well, if I knew were to get them.... that and Longhorn has higher memory requirements...

Besides, I tried the Windows 2003 full trial version a little while back, I would have gone back to it except I found it had software incompatibility problems. Mainly it hated Creative's Audigy software to an extreme degree.

Anyhow, I bought pro mainly because my college strongly recommended it(for 'networking') and because I wanted to try out the remote desktop feature.

I'd use VNC instead of RDC.. save the money. I love selling college kids copies of Windows XP.. I easily make $1k at college time. And they are none the wiser. I always tell people that it wont change anything, and they REALLY REALLY dont need it.. But they still have me upgrade it.

Lols.

If you have any choice, don't use VNC over RDC. The performance of Terminal Services makes VNC look like Morse code. There are a few other things I've found that weren't listed on that link, like a missing policy editor, lack of support for "pro" software like enterprise editions of Visual Studio, Virtual PC, etc.

What's VNC and how's it different?
