I bought a Canon EOS40D from Best Buy

EOS 40D with 28-135IS & 70-300IS

I went looking for the SONY A700 but i wasnt happy with that lens.. I ended up on this on an impulse buy, not sure how good these lenses are, but they are IS lenses.. so would be better in IQ than teh SONY 18-200.

So now I need the following:

A new gig bag
A Plastic Fantastic lens --> where to buy?
A kit lens (or the IS lens i heard about today?) to give me a wide angle
Any other things - filters, hoods?
Some good memory in CF format. I have 2*128, 256,512, 1gb in CF an a few assorted 32's.

I need to get rid of my Canon S1IS ---> how much should i ask for that.

TGG

So...you went looking for a Digital SLR (the advantage of which being you can change the lens), and you weren't happy with the lens that was on it (remembering my last point), so you bought an entirely different camera and two rather different lenses (which are IS lenses, but the A700 is an IS body, so all lenses are IS)...

There's nothing logical about that sequence of events, but I'm sure you'll be very happy with your new purchase ;)

On the IS point, it doesn't actually make the quality of the images produced any 'better' per se, it simply reduces the 'shake' if you're shooting handheld, which will indeed allow you to get more, sharper images compared to the same lens and settings without it. Somewhat of a moot point here, because the A700 has IS in the camera body, so you'd get IS with every lens you used with it :p;)

Maybe he just liked the XTi better? I know when I was looking at the cameras at the begining of this year, I didn't like the button layout of the Pentax/Sony at all. I personally would have not gotten the 28-135 lens, b/c its more suited to a FF camera, not a crop body.

Secondly, I have found that IS is most useful on telephoto lenses (~100mm eq and longer). To do in-body IS, you would have to move the sensor a rather large amount to compensate for the movement (which is beyond the technological limits). In addition is nice to be able to see the picture how it would look in the viewfinder, and not have to hope the picture gets corrected in camera!

Maybe, but he bought a 40D ;)

I'm not disputing anything you say, and I'm sure he'll be very happy, but that doesn't make his decision making process logical as described :p;)

the new 18-55 IS kit lens is going to take the coined term plastic fantastic. the 50mm f/1.8 is the nifty fifty or thrifty fifty :p

I'd say get that new IS lens.. I think I am.. just waiting to see if it's as good as the reviews show it to be.

congrats, and dug, I think he meant to imply that the lens was an IS lens therefore it's a good one... which is not logical either. as is the point with interchangeable lenses... haha.

but hey, the 40D is a damn nice camera.. best buy just shouldn't have been the place of purchase.

The Cosina 100mm Macro is already called the plastic fantastic ...

Having handled both the EOS 40D & the A700 imo the Sony is the nicer camera but not by a lot & not by as much as the price differential in the UK (~20%).
& whilst he may not have liked the Sony 18-200mm (indeed the 18-250mm is far superior) it's a type of lens that is a glaring omission from Canon's lens range.

& in-body IS works perfectly well with telephoto lenses as well as wide/standard.

so you guys are trying to give me a 'buyers remorse' eh... :)

Well I didnt pick the IS lenses, it came with teh package. I know bestbuy wasnt the best place to get it. I am sure i could have gotten it elsewhere cheaper. But I did have the no interest until 2009 option, so I took that advantage.

I just dont know how much this thing is going to be used, and while it is an impulse buy, i have been thinking of a DSLR for about a year now.

As for the lenses, i was talking to my ex's dad, who is a pro photographer, he was saying NOT to go with SONY. I was talking to him last night. He was telling me to go with NIKON, but then he is a NIKON guy. True there is no 18-xxx range lens in the canon side, but the 28-135 is fine for normal use. Though I will probably get a wide angle or the KIT for normal use too. I will wait for the reviews of the 18-55IS lens review.

Man the manual is heavy, there is SO MUCH info in it. I dont know where to start.

actually the 28-135 is completely missing wide angle. the widest it goes it normal. so, it's not really an everyday use lens. its a normal to portrait telephoto lens. an 18-105 would be more useful. not sure why canon bundles that lens with the 40D, it's not a good fit. i'd suggest selling it and picking up the new 18-55 IS. photozone's review is up already, and it is actually a pretty good lens.

pretty spendy impulse buy there! :)
