I like it and it works just fine, but I was curious if any other free alternatives have come out that is better.

Avira is a popular choice for free AV these days. I think it pretty easily beats out AVG in AV shootouts. The main problem with with the free version of Avira is that it doesn't do pop email scanning. I've been using it for a while now with no problems.

You could theoretically save all attachments to a certain folder and scan them that way.

I use AVG still. It seems to work ok.

I think Avira's on-access scanning will actually protect from email-borne malware, it just doesn't scan it at the POP3 stage of the game. When I get home, maybe I'll concoct a test to verify that.

i like AVG, but it really gets on my case because there are always so many false positives when using it!

AVG does email scans in and out if you set it up to do so. Just recently changed from AVG 7.5 to AVG 8 - the new freebie. It is much better behaved - doesn't try to get on the Internet for an update before Windows is loaded or on line. 7.5 was bad that way.

I'm having the opposite experience acutally, 7.5 wouldn't complain if I didn't update (unless a few days passed), 8 complains everytime I go into windows (I have dialup for mobile broadband so I must connect manually)

using AVG Free 8.0 now, about 2 weeks old, does email scanning stop after a period of time? seems i read somewhere that avg 8.0 stops scanning emails after 30 days to promote users to upgrade to the paid version.

Yes, avast!

And the last two Storm worm samples I ran through VirusTotal.com were not detected by Avast, making its email scans of dubious merit. How about... oh... AntiVir, which has far higher detection rates and real-time protection... and detects Storm solidly? Call me crazy... :D
