In the US it is PC to call them African-Americans
what about in england are the African-English
and so on and so forth for other countries

Not sure, but I'm not very concerned with political correctness.

As far as I'm concerned, if you were born here YOURE AMERICAN.

I once asked a black classmate about this point blank, as he was peer-editing my essay that was about the word "great person" and its stigmatization. He said all the black people he knows (and he himself) prefer to be called "black."

No. They're African-American everywhere unless they actually live in Africa.

So, a black man is born in England and he is an African-American?

it is the worst label ever. a white guy here from south africa is more of an african american than a black here who's never been to africa.

Heh. I personally just preferred to be called black. I don't care where I would be from.

Lol....African-English.

LOL. If they are born in America, then they are African-American ANYWHERE! Just like you are an American cra, ermm... American everywhere... :)

BTW, African American is so politically incorrect, there are white african americans as well...
also, some blacks are from countries that ain't African, like Trinidad and Tobago, etc...

Yes. Didn't you read my post?
Are you really from missouri? If so that would explain the idiocy of your post.

I just say "black". My black friends say "black".

I think the underlying point is that you don't need to specify race 99.99% of the time, but people do if the person they're referring to is a race other than their own.

Since everyone seems to be missing the truth...here it is.

Only in America are minorities being opressed. That's why they need a "special" title like ___-American. In all other countries, all people are opressed. Therefore no one gets a special title.

wow, just goes to show how smart the people running that award are.. in that case it needs to be changed to "Distinguished Black Student Award."

Yup, probably the only student in the school who has even BEEN to Africa, can't be called African-American.

I'm glad someone around here has a sense of humor today. Sorry if I'm using this thread to amuse myself.
