Would this PSU be ok with this setup?

C2D 6600
Asus P5B Deluxe
eVGA 7900 GTO 512 MB
2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 RAM

Thanks.

you can read about PSU's in general in my thread... but the short answer is that it depends on how many amps you have on the +12V line...

i would hazard a guess that the system would run on that PSU but i would NOT recommend it. with that vid card and CPU, esp. if OCed, along with any other components you have (HD's, DVDRW, case fans, sound card, etc) would probably be pushing that PSU to it's limit, if not well beyond.

you can get the Enhance 5150gh from eWiz for cheap, which is an excellent PSU (see jonnyguru's reviews) that will provide enough power for that system.

EDIT: forgot to mention. that PSU might be a 20 pin, whereas new mobos use 24 pins. You might still be able to use it (the 20 pin will fit in the 24 pin slot) but again, it's definitely not recommended.

EDIT 2: see this thread

It would be plenty.

Anandtech has an article from today showing a power consumption of an X6800 + 7900GS + RAM etc drawing 163W total at full load. I would think the 7900GTO would draw a bit more power than that but not too much.

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2864&p=12

430W is plenty of overhead for your system.

Edit - I found some numbers close to 90W max draw for the 7900GTO as compared to the 7900GS being around 65. So add 25W to the Anandtech total bringing it up to 188W.

I would hazard a guess that you are guessing random numbers as most people seem to with power supplies. Not everyone needs 8 trillion watts.

I wouldn't risk all that schtuff on a dodgy PSU. Plenty of folks have reported Antecs committing murder suicide. A reliable unit would be a fraction of the cost of the other hardware (and a negligible buy/sell upgrade) and eliminate doubt if nothing else.

1. it's not about the wattage, it's about the +12V rail
2. the true430 is a fairly old PSU, no telling how much longer it will last
3. I said the system would probably work, but that I wouldn't recommend it. a better safe than sorry kind of thing
4. the true430 i owned had fluctuations/jitter with an x2 3800+/x800xl system. the ops system would be more powerful and these little bumps could cause more issues.
5. you always want to have more power available than you need. running a PSU close to it's max, esp. if your comp is on 24/7, is a bad idea

If you've had the psu already for close to a year, don't plan on having it too much londer. The truepowers are built by channel well technologies. They use fujyyu capacitors that are known to deteriorate when exposed to heat. My guess is that it won't last you 6 months, but you might get by in that interim.
For a replacment, I would suggest the enhance 5140gh, not the 500w model, but the 400w one. It has 28 amps on the 12v rails combined, it 80+ certified and is arguably the best value on the market today. It's $65 shipped @ ewiz last time I checked.
