So last Friday my back started to hurt really bad getting out of bed and end up sleeping in my recliner after I decided that my 10 y/o mattress was causing the pain.

So I ended up going to Mattress Firm and spending $160 for a nice twin. What a difference a new Mattress makes. I should have brought a new one a few years ago.

Well in the future I'm not going to cheap out on my bed.

if you only paid $160 for your new mattress...I'd say you cheaped out on your bed...

I needed a new queen mattress for the motorhome. I bought one at Costco. Kirkland-branded Stearns and Foster...on sale for a bit over $700. Sumbitch is heavy though...135 lbs. The gas lifts under the bed (it's a storage compartment and has the fresh water tank) won't lift it or hold it up. I had to make a prop to hold the thing up when I need under the bed.

I know your situation leaves you with a very tight budget, so if this thing helps you then its perfect. I'm at the level in my life where I got a memory foam mattress and its... amazing. If you ever get to the point where you can reasonably afford one, get it.

We've been just buying a nice thick heavy memory foam topper every few years for the old Sealy. Eventually, we will replace our queen with a King, but have to wait for the MIL to get her own place (she's been staying in our Master Bedroom since she couldn't afford the house she was renting before).

$160 it won't last long
Dude it was 60% on sale so it wasn't an El Cheapo. Plus that what I could only afford to spend.

How much did you spend on yours? And how long do they last?

We paid just under 2k. It has some cooling gel added because pure memory foam gets hot and we live in FL. They say it should last close to 10 years so about the same as a regular mattress.

There are some downsides for sure, but, sleeping on it is amazing.

You do have to watch out. Some of those Twin or Twin XL sized ones are designed foremost for dorm use - intended to be replaced every year ... i.e. quick to wear out.

Thanks I will keep that in mind. The Salesperson when asked did say ten years.

Mattresses are tough purchases. Something most people don't spend enough time on. Haven't had to buy one for a while but things I've heard about mattress stores isn't good. My last 2 purchases spent $400 on a queen many moons ago. It didn't last long before it started sinking and didn't provide support. I tried a water bed for a few years. Support was good but all that sloshing around got to me in a few years. Don't get influenced by a woman.

Fast forward to 2006. I was dating someone who bitched and moaned because I was taking so long mattress hunting. She said, "Oh come on its just a mattress". Meanwhile her mattress was killing my back. I bought a king size memory foam hybrid for around $1100. One of the best things I ever bought. Even she had to admit how great it was. I still have the mattress not the girl :(

Bottom line paying money for a good mattress is money well spent. Didn't mean to be critical

Box springs. I just needed a new mattress.

Those wear out too, which is kinda my point. Last year, I thought I needed a new mattress until I replaced the foundation. It was night and day. (The "last straw" was when my cat jumped on the bed and the frame creaked.)

I still eventually replaced the mattress, because it was 10 years old and lumpy, but it was 90% better on a new foundation.

Well I could buy one next year when I have more money. Right I have a bunch of other things I need to spend money on.

Mattress is one of those things you should not cheap out on. Ours was just over a grand, but completely worth it considering it's been over a year and not a single night goes by where I don't notice how awesome and comfortable it is (and no back issues!).

Bah, $160 for a twin is likely a decent mattress. It's more or less at the low end of the mainstream price range for a twin. Will probably last at least 5 years, likely 7-10 years.
