So I guess cable internet still sucks?

Years, years ago, people would say that cable isn't as good as advertised because you were sharing the line with everyone else in the neighborhood.. so I was happy with slow, but steady Verizon DSL (728/128 at the time). We eventually upped to faster Verizon DSL and it's still fine.

So here at college DSL isnt available so we got cablevision cable internet (3meg/728 i think) and any time from noon-10, the internet is slow and my ping is 200+ online. In off-peak hours, its fast and i get 5 ping in some servers.

So basically cable still sucks? Or is it just cablevision that sucks? Give me medium speed guaranteed over garbage 90% of time any day.

I have a 10 mbps connection through Charter Cable - and let me tell you, it screams, and doesn't slow down. I love it.

It sounds to me like your provider sucks. I've never had a cable modem connection that I wouldn't take over DSL in a heartbeat.

You should go to a real college with a decent connection or something. I get 5 ping no matter what server I play on.

i have a 7mb (i think) cable conn, never get more than 4500 out of it tho. the 7mb DSL at work chugs at about 1200 once it goes thru my server and gets doled out to the rest of the people. i have many more issues on the DSL system than i do on my cable at home. i dont see much lag on it at any time during the day or night either. i also only have like 5 or 7 neighbors with cable to contend with.

I'm off-campus, it has nothing to do with the college and everything to do with ghetto ass new brunswick.

My cable at home gets 8Mbit down no matter what. My connection at school last year was something like 25Mbit down.

"Cable Internet" is fine. "Internet Providers" can really suck. I am constantly hearing great stuff about Verizon's FIOS though, but it may not be available in your area. Their site makes it very easy to check. Unfortunately, it is not available where I live yet :(

I have a 15 Megabit cable connection and it fast all the time. You may just live in a congested area.

I said college area, IE a college town and your provider sucks and doesn't accommodate the demand.

Do you guys think going for optimum boost (I think double the speed) for 15 more a month would help at all? Or does it not matter what my connection is if it's bogged down for one reason or another.

I bet at least if I had boost I could complain that they aren't supplying nearly what they claim..

New Brunswick is a college town.

My guess is... Rutgers?

Regardless, it's probably your internet provider, I've had cable in NJ forever and it's great. Comcast, though, not Cablevision.

Comcast is my local provider. I don't think that they've decided to block gaming yet, but I'm sure that it's on their list after they're done with all the P2P networks :)

Cablevision doesn't even offer speeds at 3mbps/768k. See www.optimumonline.com

CV definitely has their issues (especially in Connecticut). You should schedule a service call if you are getting such bad speeds.

Your connection sucks.

I've always gotten crazy ping times with cable as well as download speeds that pwn dsl

Of course, I've always lived in fairly low income neighborhoods....

Broadband speed test just gave me 2 up/500 down.. which besides being no where near what they say.. is still too fast for how slow my internet is. Could it be something with my network card and vista?

I literally have to wait 5-7 seconds for websites to even appear and my ping in source during the day will just bounce from 100-300 back and fourth on servers that sometimes give me 30 ping steady...

That's your provider's problem. Also tweak your tcp/ip stack to accommodate high bandwidth, high latency networks.

As a technology Cable completely dominates DSL in every aspect.

That's your provider, has nothing to do with cable vs dsl. They don't have enough bandwidth to accommodate the demand at peak times. The same thing can and does happen with DSL. The cable vs dsl argument IMO was made by DSL companies as a marketing scheme to try and get people not to buy cable service, the problem is there is no truth to it. DSL is shared also. Living in a college town, however, I'm not sure how you'd get around this. College kids love using their internet to the max and if everyone used their connection to 100% of it's capacity, ISP's could NOT make any money. The advertised speed is supposed to just be it's capabilities but they never say "use your internet connection to it's capacity 24x7". If you do this regularly, they'd probably cancel your account due to abuse or make you pay a higher fee to justify the bandwidth usage.
