I can't type much with 1 hand but I was bike riding across a green light crosswalk and a woman who was making a right turn on a red light did not look right at all and booted the gas after checking left for on comming traffic. Got struck, went for a flight + some aerobatics and hit the pavement. Woman gets out of car and I get up pumped with adrenaline. I ask her right away why dident you look right? And she goes I'm sorry my baby was crying. Cops/ambulance come etc etc...7 hours waiting in good old canadian health care system hospital with a hanging right shoulder they xray me, put me in a sling and send me home to my hysterical parents.

Havent been out of my house for almost 2 weeks now, gotta have my sling on all the time. It's crazy how life changes in a matter of seconds. They say I gotta be like this for 6-8 weeks (considering it heals properly, if not I will need surgery). I went from having a life to becoming the ultimate couch potato with 50 + gigs of TV shows downloaded in the past week. I hope I get out of this and it heals beautifully and after that I am going to throw a massive party, you are all invited of course if you can make it to Toronto. :)

Anyone else had this injury or knows someone that did? How did it turn out? Tips/advice/comments? I have a lot of time on my hands and lurk-reading OT kills time nicely for me. Also anyone know any good sites that I can read about regarding the injury, injury forum, I would greatly appriciate it.

that really sucks. I wonder if $$$$$ US doctors could have done more. I know people on motorcycles with broken shoulders that are mostly mobile after a month..

sue? I mean honestly.. I'm against suing people most of the time... but sounds like total negligence to me

Broke mine but only in one place. I only had to wear a sling for a couple days but I did have to wear are really uncomfortable x-brace thing around my shoulder to pull myt shoulders back which really didn't work. Lets see tips. Don't forget its broke and try to pick crap up that hurts :). Depspite the doctors saying mine healed fine I lost some of my range of motion and even now 12 years later that side looks a bit funky and it still hurts every now and again. If you sleep on your side like I do I finally figured out I could sleep on the side that was broken if I pinned my arm and shoulder behind me.

I don't look to my right a lot either. It's just not natural until you hit the gas to make that right turn. ;) Someday you'll understand.

If not, you should...though riding your bike when you're suppoded to walk it across could be an issue when doing that...

I have had an unbefreakinlievable number of close calls with ****** idiotic drivers in the past year.

Why?

Well because apparently if you walk, rollerblade, or bike, you are not important on the road.

I don't know how many times i've stopped on my blades or bike in the middle of the intersection because i already know the dumbass turning right won't stop or even look :|

I seriously hate most drivers, since over 50% are ****** morons.

That makes no sense to me. Baby is crying so she guns a right turn? You should have stayed down on the road to make her feel bad. Since you got up okay, all she did was make some lame excuse and her life went on w/o a glitch.

WTF were you doing riding your bike in the crosswalk? Also, if she was looking left for oncoming traffic that means you were going against the flow of traffic? If so, you=stupid.

I've never fractured my clavicle, but have broken each one twice:) I was quite the little evel kenieval when I was a kid. The first one was "playfighting" with a little bully seven year old when I was four. Broke the other after my sister; who was five, me four, put the parked car we were sitting in into drive, with a pond behind us. She jumped, I followed and the cars front wheel ran my shoulder over. Broke that one again jumping a ramp. This brings us to the last time, which happened while I was drunk, and I have no idea how.

They always seemed to heal fast, but in my opinion, once they break they are always a bit weak, which is why mine broke so often after the first two breaks at four year old.

A fracture is different than a break though. I know my healing time was quick, like a couple weeks with that stupid x sling you have to wear and I was fine. Good luck with your injuries.

Yes I am, she is at fault, the cop who came to see me at the hospital to give me her information told me she is at fault. Seen my lawyer on tuesday, gonna be a long process but hopefully she pays for my suffering. I am pretty positive if I was walking/jogging/rollarblading I would have still ended up on the hood of her car, she did not bother looking right at all even though she came to a complete stop before the crosswalk. I have 3 phone numbers of witnesses that seen me get hit so it should be good.

Thx for the support Jules.

Not sure if I can clearly see what you're explaining.

I'm just not sure because you said you were going on a green light, which means she should have saw you if she was looking left. That is unless you were riding against traffic...

Can you clarify?

you drive enough and you take things for granted... especially in suburbia where people are not usually around the streets... you just get into a routine when making these kinds of right turns... 99% of the time there will be nobody/nothing there in your way. It's definitely a mistake by the driver, but understandable. The excuse was not.

The only way I'd drive more carefully is if I drove in Manhattan (or any other city) with all those pedestrians lining the streets.

If she was looking left, he was going with the flow of traffic.

I broke my clavicle earlier in the year on Bathurst St. I was slalomming through the streetlight posts on the sidewalk on my 10 speed. Missed one at a good click and smash! Broke clean through in about the worst spot that I coud've. Never really healed that well. Lump on my shoulder from the upended bone and I'm still fairly weak in that arm(dominant too). I think I need surgery but I'm gonna give it a couple more months. They say it can take up to a year to have the bone reunion fully. Worst pain I was ever in, and I've been in a lot of pain. Then again, I didn't go to the hospital until 12 hrs. later.

Um...I think you have it backwards. If she looked left (which she did) and he was w/ the flow of traffic, she would have seen him. But the OP specifically said she turned RIGHT without looking right and that's when they collided.

Therefore, it's probably safe to say that he was going against traffic.

But I asked OP to clarify so let's wait for him to give us more details.

I broke mine in a couple of places playing Racquetball. Wore a sling for about a month, and was still fairly mobile. Have a small bump now where it healed over.

Okay, if cars are coming from her left and he was coming from her left then she should have seen him. He stated "a woman who was making a right turn on a red light did not look right at all and booted the gas after checking left for on comming traffic." Doesn't sound like he was going with the flow of traffic to me.

My dad was hit by a car while walking home from work. The guy just drives away and just before he gets out of visual range he thinks better of it and comes back. My dad had some fractured bones and a dislocated arm (and it was in an extremely inhuman position at the time). The guy gets out of the car and asks my dad if he wants a ride home.

I broke mine playing football. It didn't heal properly and to this day I can feel it start to flex as I start working out more. It makes for some fun workouts. Why aren't you out doing stuff? I couldn't really drive or play sports, but I could still hang out with friends and stuff. Just do what I did and leach off your friends who can drive you around for a while.

Thx for the replies guys.

For clarification, I was not with the flow of traffic, Jules has it right, I was on the opposing side. I was not on the street though but on the sidewalk and on the crosswalk is where she hit me. I usually stop and predict people that are not going to stop but this lady fully stopped before the crosswalk and went without looking. In Canada you are required as a driver especially when making right turns to look back and check your blind spot for bikes etc. This was not some suburban place, it's a big intersection in a busy city with tons of people, cyclists etc. I am lucky to be alive. It could have been a kid riding out with his friends or anyone for that matter crossing from that sidewalk.

Some of the comments the lady and I exchanged before cops got there:

Her: Do you need money for a cab home?
Her: Do you think you can ride home (meanwhile my bike looks like a pretzel and my shoulder is owned)
Her: How much did your bike cost? Me: 500 $ Her: Nooooooooooo I don't think it is that much.
Me: Im calling the police (pulling out cell)
Her: No no...(too late sirens someone already called)

My main concern right now is to heal up nicely, I really want to be able to continue lifting weights a year from now. As for going out while I am here healing, I don't want to do any of the sort, I would rather be put out in a comma for 2 months and wake up healed. I feel like total garbage reliving the moment and worrying about how its all going to turn out. I also feel depressed, because Ive been working out 5 days a week for the past 3 years and when that exercise stops I feel like I in slob mode, gaining weight etc...ugh.

Bozono: I would never ride downtown, bathurst and that whole annex area is doomsday for bikers. I go to college downtown also and I see someone on a bike getting owned or almost getting mashed every day.

From now on: Bike, into car, to the park, any intersections or possible places of danger, Iam walking. The worst thing too, I cant even play games, I had Q4 and FEAR for 2 days then I get owned. :(
