and all i can really tell is that it is 1.6" smaller than my 2 year old hanns-g lcd monitor lol.

i got the hp 2311xi and had/have this hanns-g model:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824254040

i mean i guess i can tell some difference in reading, but gameplay is no different. do i need to adjust the settings? i don't have any idea what i'm doing when i screw around in the menu. i tried a couple of things and it still looks "nice" but it doesn't look "i spent $185 and traded 1.6" of screen size" nice.

btw i have a 7850 video card.

the 2311xi uses an e-ips panel (in general s-ips > e-ips > tn)

an important thing to do is to set the brightness down, as pretty much all monitors are set too bright (something around 35-45).
i couldn't find any suggested settings for the hp 2311xi, but my hp zr22w is set to something like 35-40 brightness, 80 contrast, 6500k sRGB

the first difference you should notice is that off angle viewing has improved drastically, especially with dark images

it might be pretty hard to tell, but if you put the panels side by side you should be able to notice a difference in contrast as the hanns generally do poorly there
in games this is most noticeable in scenes with impressive lighting effects (sunsets/dark areas with soft rays of light, etc)

this thread might be helpful

Most low end IPS panels are still 6-bit with color dithering, so you probably won't notice a drastic change in image quality unless you had a really low end LCD.

The biggest change you should notice is reduced image quality loss when slouching in your chair or looking at the screen from an offset angle. That's the main draw of IPS in my opinion.

It would easier to tell if they were side by side. I have a TN 120Hz monitor next to a U2711, and there is a noticeable difference. To be honest, I'm not sure there is enough of a difference to care one way or another, unless you are looking at a spec sheet. Or color accuracy is really important. The TN is noticeably brighter though.

Oh thanks so much for posting this! All the chatter about the Catleaps had me ready try one.

I bought the Hanns.G 27.5 inch for $240 and I'm pretty darn happy with it.

I'll leave it to one of my friends to try the S-IPS rather than buy one sight unseen...

tuffluck, I'm trying out an HP 2311xi also. I think it's a pretty nice monitor. The big thing with IPS, like others have said, is that you can view it from angles and it still looks good. So, stuff at the top of the screen looks good when your head is low and vice versa. Eventually some people will post their settings for the monitor that you can try and also people will calibrate their screens and then post the .icc profile for you to apply. For now you can download the HP driver here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=5304085&task=&

My only gripes with this monitor so far are:
-On dark screens I notice bright glow from the corners, esp lower right side.
-lack of height adjustment on stand
-has hdmi input but no audio out

I really like the gaming mode...works great for BF3 and easy to switch into.

People generalize about IPS and TN quality. I have an asus PA246Q ISP next to my almost 8 years old syncmaster 173p and yes the asus looks better but is not like the samsung is terrible in comparison; the main differences are the brightness (better asus) and the color that can't be adjusted in the samsung (because is software based and it is broken in w7). Both of these displays cost me about the same amount of money BTW, so $400 8 years ago wasn't cheap.

With just run-of-the-mill applications and the internet I notice little difference between my new e-IPS 6 bit + FRC Dell U2412M and my old HP w2207h TN monitor. In games its like night and day. Color, clarity and brightness is much better with the Dell. This is with both monitors calibrated to the same settings with a Spyder4 Elite.

to be honest, the off-angle viewing looks better on my TN. i'm pretty sure i'm going to switch back. it wasn't worth the loss of 1.6".

I wouldn't want to lose screen size either, but how often are you looking at your screen off-angle? I never do. Even so the top of my old TN is much darker than the bottom. A little IPS glow on the bottom right corner of my new Dell is a much better trade off.

i think the uniformity of my TN is exactly the same when i sit directly in front of it. honestly i really can't tell any difference. the IPS is brighter in games, but again, it's not worth paying $185 and losing 1.6" for...

The OP had way better luck with TNs then I ever did. I had a 21" LG that was highly recommended at the time and a Gateway 24" that was on the recommended list for good all around monitors in the monitor thread that used to be here. Both of them had a problem with anything black or shadowed at the bottom of the screen. Always had a bluish glow and looked like crap. Consistent edge to edge viewing and accurate colors is worth everything to me. Love this screen for gaming.

You keep bringing up that you lost 1.6"
Why did this take you by surprise?
Did you read the display specifications before you got the IPS?

Lol. Obviously I knew this, however thought it would be worth sacrificing for an IPS.

My Hanns-G has a dead pixel and I still like it better.

Don't let that panel deter you from a catleap. There is absolutely no comparison between any tn and the catleap. I've owned dozens of monitors and he catleap is hands down the best value on the market. I can't use tns anymore. The gamma shift from top to bottom kills me.
