I took a trip in my time machine and came back with some fascinating news. Invest in AMD. In two years the stock will quadruple.

Contests like that are like playing Home Run Derby. You have to swing for the fences to have any chance of winning. Making a modest profit won't win, even though it would be fine in real life. Look for stocks that fluctuate a lot (in investor-speak, have a "high beta").

Are you allowed to short stocks or buy ETFs?

I don't care about "winning". I just want to play with it a bit, and eventually do some research into how the whole thing works. It's mostly academic interest in how a complex system works really.

And yes you can short stocks.

Buy BQI if it goes below $5. This company is sitting on huge oil reserves in Canada. The demand for oil will not deminish anytime soon.
