and what do I find?
my pipes have been backing up and my basement is filled with raw sewage.
thats just a lovely evening, let me tell you.
i called the landlord and a plumber is coming over tomorrow.
do plumbers usually clean up that sort of mess or do they just fix the problem and let someone else do it?
i know youre disappointed but no pics, sorry guys.

BAN!! :p

d'oh, that's gotta suck. And I think you'll have to do the clean up yourself, cuz the plumber is only required to fix the pipe.

If you're pating rent and you have a landlord I don't see HOW you would be responsible for cleaning that upp. YOU didn't cause the pipes to back up, well maybe except for that big turd after the enchilladas, but it's not your fault. Your landlord should take care of it. He should have insurance on the property and if he needs to go through them then that's what he should do. But you shouldn't have to clean it up.

I'm 99% sure that your landlord has to clean it up.. He's insured so it probably won't cost him any more (are deductables per incident or per service?).. Anyway, don't grab a bucket and a mop - have someone do it (and do it right, you don't want to leave any residue behind).

So, when you talk to your landlord, say something to the effect of "When are you sending someone over to clean the mess up in the basement?". Do not ask or offer to clean the mess up. That is your landlord's responsibility. He should hire a crew to do it right. There are professional services in every city/town that specialize in this sort of thing. You can get very, very sick from a sewage leak. Do not attempt to do this yourself. If the landlord somehow puts it on you, call in a service to do it right.

Good luck.
