I work at a school as an assistant and the usual guys who teach this are going to be gone tomorrow. So the other female teachers nominated me. It'll be good experience, but the subject matter doesn't really thrill me, especially with younger students like 5th graders. Any suggestions as how to approach this? Gameshow? Group discussions? etc?

This'll be fun....

**UPDATE 03-23-06**
Well, the class went well. Although there was a lot of chitter chatter, I think it was about puberty in general. I handed out slips of paper (pink also), and they wrote questions on the paper and put them in a basket. Then I drew out random ones and talked about it. Afterwards, we watched a 15 minute video and then had a short question/answer session and it was over. An hour goes by so quick!

Strangest question written down: Can a man have a penis AND a vagina? :D

I actually just skipped this question.

At the beginning of your presentation you can have them write down questions and put them in a box. At the end you can read them without them having to have their identity revealed.

That's a classic. Combine it with Fuzzy Bunny's Guide to You-Know-What and you're set. :D

When I was in 5th grade we did just what Platypus said. They had us write down a question then randomly picked one out of a box and they answered the question and any other questions that anyone had. That seemed to be a good approach. That way too you don't give too much detail because they are the ones asking the questions thus you can provide the answer that will suffice.

if you go with the anonymous box idea, you should pad it with a couple of woppers, stash a few ringers in the box before you pass it around

Go ahead and practice by teaching ATOT about puberty. The response will be the same you get from 5th graders.

Good Luck with that. Just out of curiousity, does this class require permission from the parents?

start it out scientifically by talking about the Human development cycle, and then working your way to the social implications, etc... this way encourages the 5th graders to be more mature-minded

Not that I know of. They asked me today to present tomorrow. I'm assuming it doesn't need permission slips. I just previewed the video that goes with the presentation. Penis and scrotums and ejaculations, oh my!

Whatever you do don't tell them "the man parks his beef bus in tuna town."

If you're really daring, bring a dildo and a flesh light and demonstrate for them.

Do not use any slang words for any parts. Kick out anyone that laughs a lot, not ready for the talk. Question box is a good idea, but some questions might be left best for their parents to answer.
