So I get out of class today, and notice this girl...

She's getting in her car. As I'm walking toward my car, I hear her start her car and then a curdling squelching grind followed by the car shutting off.

I cringed at the sound. It was aweful.

The girl got out of her car, as I opened the door to mine. I paused.

Sh!t. Had to see if I could help in some way. (back of my mind I'm selfishly thinking about getting her number)

I went over and chatted it up a little with her. It was raining a little. She was cute, little taller than me, brunette, smaller mouth, big brown eyes.

Ok the beef of the thread: So she says that this just happened. She hasn't been in an accident, (unless someone hit her in the lot(?)) and nothing like this has happened before.
She's got a ~2000 civic, two door I think. I got under the hood, she started it. All good. She puts it into drive.

The front wheels are turned a little, so that the wheel sticks out from the well a bit. Man, she put that thing into gear and that wheel started shaking like an epileptic- as well as making that horrible horrible sound. I noticed that the wheel was less than an inch from the well, and I think the wheel would have dug into the wheel well if she could have straightened the wheels out. (which she couldn't)

I thought the wheel came out of the ball joint, but I'm not really sure. It seemed like the link between the tranny and the wheel was seperated somehow and the gear/link between them was grinding.

What does OT think?

And before anyone asks, I don't have pics of her.
So maybe this will satiate the carnal desires of OT.

EDIT: Pic is NSFW, although I didn't think there was nudity there... ymmv...

Who says she didn't just leave? 😉

Axle, spindle, Bearings, Transmission

I thought if it was the tran that the wheel would turn at least, same if it were the bearings?

My guess is the outer CV joint on the drive axle is blown. 2-300$ and it will be right as rain.

CV joint... yeah that's what I ment.

Would the wheel still turn if the joint is broken? At least try? I wouldn't guess so, but maybe the turning system is seperate from the joint itself. That's all I got.

The turning (side to side) and rotating (wheel rolling in drive and reverse) are combined in the CV joint. If the joint is blown, it's like having a broken wrist. You still move your hand, but it's gonna grind and not move very well if at all. The wheel may or may not move side to side, depending on how ground up and blown the joint is, and the axle will just spin and grind in the joint if it can move at all.

I second the thought that the CV (constant velocity) joint is blown. I had this happen to me in an old Honda Civic.

How come that's funnay? I thought civics where decent cars?

Edit: dang. now this thread is going to get locked... 🙁

if the axle spindle is stripped... the transmission gears will turn... but the axels wont and youll definately hear grinding noises.
