So, I found the style of beer I like - but it is pricey - any cheaper ones?

So I like wheat ales. I like blue moon in particular. Where I live it is 8.50 for a 6 pack of bottles. . . any 'cheaper' ones that I may like as well?

Go to your local liquor store and look. Wheat ales tend to be cheap and plentiful.

You're an idiot. Wheat ales usually are usually brewed with orange peel and coriander, and an orange slice will enhance the flavor. Note that you don't put the slice IN the beer. Wheat ales are the fastest growing type of beer in the US.

Anyway, Budweiser just came out with a wheat version. It's not too bad, but it's a little more watery than Blue Moon. I'd compare it to Maxwell Hourse vs. Starbucks. They both get the job done, but you can tell the difference ;) Wheats tend to be more expensive to make because of the more expensive ingredients. It's my beer of choice too so I feel your pain.

Sam Adams Blackberry Witbier and Guinness Extra Stout have become my two standbys, but they're not much cheaper...

Oh and $8.50 for a 6 pack isn't expensive unless you're comparing it to crap like Keystone lite.

blue moon and shocktop are about the only choices in a widely available (drinkable) wheat. and i only see shocktop on tap.

you can find sam adams and flying dog wheat varieties around here, as well, but i can't think of much else.

Man, everytime I see a beer thread I'm thankful I live in an area where there's a tremendous variety of good beer at good prices. Here I'd expect to pay maybe $7 for blue moon. Most micro/"macro" brews are around $7 for a 6 pack.

It's interesting that beer brewers are "discovering" wheat....again.

Beer used to be brewed with wheat almost exclusively, but the move to barley was made, at least in the U.S., primarily by WWII and the food shortages during that war.

Spotted Cow is a popular wheat / micro brew in my area, and I think it is excellent.

Spotted Cow is excellent.

OP, you might also like something like Hacker-Pschorr. Also, if you have it in your area I cannot say enough about Bells Brewery beers. They are just great in my opinion, I've never had a bad beer from them. They make a wheat beer that is pretty tastey.

Not cheap choices when compared to MGD, but at least a few more options to look in to. Enjoy!

I think it's the honey, orange, and other flavors they're adding to the brew that is sparking an interest though. It's a completely new flavor and it's damn delicious :)
