So, I finally got porcelain veneers

I had a pretty big gap in my front teeth and decided to finally do something about it. Had porcelain veneers installed Monday. They looked great. On Thursday, one of them came loose. My dentist cleaned it, re-etched the tooth and re-attached it. Today two more (different) veneers came off completely. Clearly something is wrong.

Since they have to grind down the original teeth in order to make room for the veneers, there's no going back. I'm thinking this was one of the worst decisions I've ever made. *sigh*

Update:
Went back to the dentist this morning. He examined the remaining attached veneers and easily removed one of them. That's 4 of the 6 that failed to bond.

He then re-examined the cement used to hold the temporary veneers in place 3 weeks ago (you wear these while the porcelain pieces are being fabricated) and found that it contained a chemical that's not normally used for temporary veneers. He theorized that this contaminated the tooth surface and caused the permanent bonds to fail. He re-sanded the surface of the teeth a bit and re-applied the porcelain pieces. Hopefully if contamination was the problem, this will solve it...

Something must be wrong, I had the same tooth gap issue and did the same thing. Mine are going on 2 years old and the only issue I had was breaking one eating beef jerky 🙁 It was covered under warranty, got a new one in 2 weeks.

You do have to be careful how you use them. I didnt realize how much I used my front teeth for stuff. Anything from biting tags off clothes to tearing off chunks off beef jerky. My dentist told me I had to use caution eating stuff like bagels, hard pizza crust, apples lots of foods you never even thought about.

Still glad I did it.

I am seriously glad I have good teeth.

thx guys!

Agreed. 😀 Watching what I eat doesn't sound fun.

Not so much what you eat as how you eat it. This is only an issue if your veneers are your upper front teeth which take a lot of pressure when eating some foods.

Got porcelain veneers when I lost my teeth on New Year's this past year. No troubles yet, but I have had to adjust how I insert food into my mouth. Basically I avoid the front teeth as much as possible.

Vaneers?? Wierd. Is that the cheap way of doing a crown or just another word for crown?

I really dont see a vaneer working to good in the long run. A complete crown would be the way to go.

Veneers are much more conservative than full crowns, since only 0.5-1mm of enamel on the front of the tooth is taken away to make room for the veneer. They usually cost as much as full crowns and can last a very long time when taken care of properly. Obviously the OP is having some sort of bonding issues with his, which I'm sure will be taken care of.

About 5k (6 veneers across the top).

Clearly there is some sort of bonding problem. 6 veneers, 3 of which have failed within a week of application. At this point, I don't know if it's something I'm doing (in my sleep perhaps?) or if the UV-cured cement the dentist is using is somehow contaminated or what. I've lost all confidence in the veneers that have yet to come loose. I didn't really expect them to last 50 years but I did kinda expect them to last more than 5 days...

the veneers shouldn't be coming loose like that. ask him to use different cement next time.

are you sure you didn't bite into anything to loosen them up?

I've spent all day trying to figure out what I might have done/ate to do it. The toughest food that comes to mind was some toasted French-style bread that I ate on Wednesday. I expect I'll have a good long conversation with my dentist tomorrow morning so we can figure out what to do and how to prevent it from happening again. I'd hate for something like this to happen on a business trip or while on vacation...

Wow, sorry to hear you're having so much trouble with them. I remember when you posted about thinking of getting them. Clearly, the dentist is doing something wrong (has he had much experience with them?) or there's something wrong with the cement. Hopefully he'll get the problem corrected and you won't even notice they are there any more except for when someone compliments you on what a great smile you have. 🙂

Ouch. Do they have to re-file the tooth every time they reattach them?

The very little I know about these things made me think they weren't such a hot idea. They have to grind your teeth down so you can't just decide you don't like them and take them off, yet if you're unlucky, you have to have them redone every 10 years or so until you decide you want dentures...

nope, its cosmetic dentistry for the most part. that perfect hollywood smile is created using veneers much of the time.

it's a bit unnerving that he didn't realize that theory beforehand.

My two front teeth are porcelain veneers and they haven't come off in 18 years.

Give it patience for the doc to work his magic. They look great and never get yellow...

temporaries fall out... everyone i know had em fall out at some point. (self included)

I just got done getting my real veneer re-cemented. Apparently my lower cuspid wasn't shaved down enough, so it kept hitting the veneer and eventually it came lose (damn you french bagette)
