And did anyone else feel like they needed to be "on something" while watching it??

Just to clarify:

Yubaba = Granny?

Also, wtf was the point of the "Faceless Monster"?

Other than the parts where I was sitting there mumbling "WTF?" to myself, absolutely beautiful movie. I can't stress that enough.

Haven't had a chance to see this one yet, but I want to - I love Miyazaki's movies :) Other good ones to check out:

- Castle Cagliostro
- Laputa: Castle in the Sky
- Kiki's Delivery Service
- Naussica of the Valley of Wind
- Princess Mononoke
- Grave of the Fireflies

Fireflies is more a Studio Ghibli movie; Miyazaki didn't direct it like the other ones in that list. Still a good one though.

I'll grant you the depressing part; everyone I've ever talked to about that movie said the same thing. Boring? I don't know, I'll have to actually sit and watch the entire thing (I've seen parts of it, but always when I have more important things to do :|)

I didn't really like Spited Away. Grave of the Fireflies was more of a documentary style to illustrate the side that you don't see very often of WW2.

I did see Mononoke. Definitely superior story wise. Mainly because....it made sense! Visually, they were both stunning, but I thought Spirited was a hair better.

Naussica is next to impossible to find... I ended up getting a copy of it on vcd because it was the only way I could get it. It also shows up a "Warriors of the Wind" too. Awesome movie; was my 3rd ever anime for me (behind Akira and Project A-Ko), and continues to be one of my favorites easilly out of about 30 titles I own.

Castle Cagliostro is pretty cool too, have it on dvd, and it's a pretty good way to get pulled into the Lupin universe.

Just saw it for the first time last night and I rather enjoyed it.

Now, it's pretty much the first piece of Anime I've ever seen...but I thought it was good.

Syran -

I know Naussicaa is nearly impossible to find :) And, especially after having seen the original, I wouldn't touch Wariors of the Wind with a 10-foot pole(they cut a 1/4 of the movie out. WTF?) Fortunately I had a friend in Japan who sent me a copy of Naussicaa. Great movie, IMO, and one of my favorites out of all the anime I've seen. I plan on picking up the three new Miramax DVD releases - Spirited Away, Kiki's, and Laputa - sometime this summer. I wonder if Nausicaa will ever be released here in the US?

All of Miyazaki's movies are very deep, Spirited Away had many things like this. The 'spirits' you see in the movie are Japanese Folklore and all have meaning...including NoFace, there are various reasons each is included.

You don't need to know all the history to enjoy the film though.

Faceless monster = Miyazaki actually. He's trying to get people to like him in real life and he threw it in the movie as well.

If you knew anything about Japanese (maybe other Asian countires as well) culture, you would understand more about the movie. This is part of the reason that popular films in Japan (or anywhere else) aren't as popular here.
