SO, after 7 years of AMD exclusive rigs I decided to go back to an intel rig as that seemed to give me the best performance for my moneys worth right now.
I got the new parts yesterday and started immediately to assemble it.
Parts are:
Gigabyte P35-DQ6 MB
Corsair HX620W PSU
Corsair 800MHz CL4 2GB kit
Core2Duo E6850 CPU
2x400GB harddrives
NEC DVD-RW
BFG OC2 Geforce 8800GTX
Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme with a scythe flex fan mounted to it.
All components sitting nicely in my Antec 900 case.
Install was a blast and the noise? It is much quiter than my old system which by no means was noisy at al. Even with the Scythe fan spinning at 1200 RPM, and the rest of the case fans spinning anywhere between 500-1000 RPM there is only a slight distuingtion of a noice coming from the system, the HDDs are the loudest ones by far.
Right after Win XP was isntalled I decided to do some quick 3dmark benching (sorry, no games yet) with the newly release 162.18 drivers for XP. I dont have the scores with me so my scores may be off by 100-500 points.
3D Mark 2000: ~37 000 marks
3D Mark 2001: ~56 000 marks
3D Mark 2003: ~35 000 marks
3D Mark 2005: ~18600 marks
3D Mark 2006: ~11 800 marks
All those scores are with the components exactly as I recieved them which I am quite happy with
So with the OS installed and everything I decided to do some quick overclocking, it was late at night so I only tried for about 5 minutes.
So far I have managed to run the CPU @ 400x9=3.6GHz with 1.35VCore, orthos tested for 8hours+ without any errors. Im sure I can go a bit higher but I simply did not have more time . So during the weeken or right after it im going to aim for higher. 3.6Ghz was my first goal, now I am aiming for 4.0Ghz 24/7 usage, but we'll see how much VCore I need to pump into the CPU for that, I do not want to go over 1.4V for 24/7 usage but I will try to look for the highest benchable speed.
With all that said, does the 3D Mark scores seem to be on track so far? And any tips in regards for tweaking the system will be very appreciated.
