So I finally decided to get a data plan

Originally when I looked at data plans it was like $75/mo for 50MB cap then like a dollar per MB over or something like that. I was too scared that even though I try to stay below 50 that some kind of update or something happens where I end up using a few 100MB and end up with a ridiculous bill.

I looked at plans recently and saw that they had 750MB for like 50/mo. Much more reasonable. So decided what the heck, I'll get it. At least I can receive and send pictures in text messages now, and it's kind of fun to be in middle of nowhere and be able to have internet, or even VPN into my house. :p Was on a road trip recently and it was great to check up on the house while on the highway.

With that said, anything I can do to make sure stuff like updates don't start with data turned on? I denied google play and few other services from using data and I also set a hard limit on usage so it turns off data after 750MB, but just wondering what other things I can do to ensure I never go over the limit. My biggest fear is updates, as stuff randomly likes to update willy nilly without any kind of warning so I want to make sure that can't happen if wifi is not on. Is this default behaviour?

On a day to day basis I barely use data though so I almost feel like it's a waste to even have it, but it's still nice to have when I'm out of wifi range and this new plan is not even that much more money than my original voice/text plan.

Add a firewall so you can control what uses the data.

This plus setting the OS to update apps only over WiFi should stop anything from eating up data. It's been a few months since I had an Android phone so I haven't tested it with lollipop, but AFWall+ is pretty good for this.

Holy crap, 750MB for 50/mo? Are all Canadian phone plans like that?

Yeah, Canadian mobile rates are some of the highest in the developed world. Even that's expensive though. I pay $65/mo for 2GB plus unlimited talk and text including long distance. That's with Fido (Rogers).

Who's your provider Red?

That $50 per month is all-in (that is, voice / text / data). Me, I'm just thankful I got in on Rogers' coveted 6GB/$30 data add-on back in 2008. It's still a healthy amount even now, and it makes a big difference in how I use my phone away from WiFi.

One suggestion to the OP: have you tried Opera Max? It compresses some of your app data on Android, so you won't chew as much bandwidth.

I'm with Bell. We don't have any of the other providers here like Wind and so on. I think we do have Rogers but from what I've heard the coverage is not that great. With my plan the rate works for all of Canada too, so anywhere I go it wont be roaming. I can get a few GB but it gets more expensive, and really I think 750 should be enough. I mostly want to ensure I don't get caught with some app that decides to update at a bad time when I'm not on wifi.

Where is the setting to stop that?

Aren't you in Timmins?

If so, you can get Koodo's $45 plan, which includes unlimited Canada-wide minutes (free long distance to and from anywhere in Canada, to another number in Canada), call display, voicemail 10, and unlimited international SMS and MMS, plus 1 GB data. Also, if you want to use iPhone Visual Voicemail, it's only $2 more. It's a bring-your-own-device plan though, so no phone subsidies.

Virgin Mobile's plan is very similar, but not quite as good, since it is voicemail 3, and SMS/MMS is not international - Canada/US only.

Fido's plan seems similar, but they haven't included any voicemail at all, and the SMS/MMS is also not international - Canada only. Fido does have a comparable plan, but only through their retentions department.

Koodo = Telus
Virgin = Bell
Fido = Rogers

Note also that in Ontario, Telus and Bell (and therefore Koodo and Virgin) share towers.

Looks like they've changed their plans again. I have the old $65 Smart Plan which does include voicemail and international text.

The BYOD plans I'm talking about are recent, and it was started by Koodo in the last month or two. Virgin's plan and Fido's plan are both responses to Koodo's plan.

There are also 2 GB and 3 GB variants for $55 and $65 respectively.

Virgin's plan has a differentiator which is a member's program that offers stuff like discounts on Starbucks gift cards, and Fido's plan has a differentiator which is a free Spotify membership for 2 years which is kinda lame because you still incur data usage, and it's at the expense of voicemail and international text. Fido does actually have a direct competitor for Koodo's plan, but it's a retention plan so only existing Fido customers can get it, and it's new too so some Fido agents may not even be aware of it.

I personally have Fido's grandfathered plan which unlimited Canada-wide voice, unlimited international SMS/MMS, call display, visual voicemail, and 2 GB data, for $56.
