So I finally catch a decent size fish... and a Dolphin eats it before I can reel it in :(

Went fishing tonight at the piers at the Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

Caught a few pinfish with my sabiki then cast em out in the hope of something nice.

About an hour in, I got a HUGE hit. Set the hook and started working her in. As it gets close, nearly the point I'm about to pull her out of the water, I see the fish near the surface, looked to be a NICE size grouper, definitely a keeper. Sure enough, just as my line is vertical and i'm about to pull her out, a dolphin comes up from under the pier and snaps it right off my line.

I was looking forward to those sandwiches tomorrow :(

I was too mad to be amazed by it :) lol

The dolphin sure know where to go to catch a meal though, there had to have been at least 25 there tonight just waiting for us to catch some for them. It actually was difficult to cast sometimes as you didn't want to cast right over em.

Someone a few spots down from us caught a Pelican :( It was dicey there for awhile but they eventually got him free and he flew away.

Here in Oregon, it is the Ospreys.

I had a whole stringer of trout in Crane Prairie Reservoir last year when one one of those bastards came down and took the whole damn stringer of trout I had sitting in the water.

you're minus a fish but plus a good story to tell. that won't fill your stomach but maybe that will get you pity points for free food tomorrow.

Not this year. Well, salmon anyway.
It really sucks to haul in a good sized salmon and have a big bite taken out of it, like half.

I was in the 4th grade at an elementary school in Clearwater (near where the bridge is) when the original Sunshine Skyway bridge was hit by a cargo ship and a bus that couldn't stop in time dove off into the water...that was a sad day :(

I've fished 20+ years in Florida and never seen a dolphin snatch a hooked fish. Seen my fair share of birds (fucking pelicans), barracuda, shark, etc. take off with a hooked fish, but never a dolphin... and I've had them around while reeling fish in plenty of times. Seems like strange behavior... my god, it's finally happening. <clenches shotgun>

LOL, that had to suck.

Trivia:
Even though dolphins have lots of teeth , they swallow their food whole.

LOL! That sucks, I know the feeling after having some good fish taken by sharks.

What's so bad about it is you didn't lose the fish by your own doing. You had him and mother nature just decided that fish was destined for someone else.

Oh, and grouper sammiches FTW
