So I figured out why I like cars from the 90's more than the '00s...

I finally realized it after driving down a line of parallel parked cars and noticing that virtually every single one looked like it just slammed on the brakes. None have an even keel, they all feature big ass rear quarter panels and high trunk lids.

Compare:
Forward rake
Level

The cars that look really good today either have an even rake, or have larger rear tires. And the lack of clean simple lines in most newer designs bugs me to no end. (see the Mustang for an example of a car WITH clean simple lines)

I hate newer cars because they are all stupidly designed, lets get an airflow concept. Smooth low car and cover the bottom of the car to not disturb flow. This equals this car

The body it I don't need, but the V8 sure is nice, and still being able to hit 30mpg driving sensibly. There is a reason Ford put over a years work in the wind tunnel with the car and it shows.

Of course personally I am a Vintage Trans Am person. like this

The Dodge neon is the worst offender... It looks like its braking. All the time.

The neon in that picture looks like the ghost driver is trying to avoid rear ending a Pinto.

Neon = garbage :( I can say that (proudly?) as a former sufferer (owner) with one.

Hmm, I really like the TL and G37, and of course the Mercedes CLS.

What I think is that the forward swept look got overused by shit/average cars, and it sort of brings any design like that down to a certain amount by association.

There use to be a time when aerodynamics were taken into consideration for a design. Now we get drag limited performance sedans and coupes.

Nothing beats the mexicaned out late 80's Nissan Sentra's that have the rear lifted and front lowered. I've seen a few of them around work lately.

Except the endless sea of mexicaned out trucks (predominantly Escalades and F150s) with either a) 22+" spinners with rubber band tires or b) skateboard wheels, alteza lights, chrome headlight blockers, horizontal billet grills, chrome window visors, and chrome wheel well flares.

All applied with 3M tape of course.

I think one of the best looking family cars in the 1990s was the 5th generation Honda Accord...clean, smooth lines and a low front end contribute to an aerodynamic look. In fact, I prefer the look of my '96 Accord to that of my parents' 2003 Accord or their 2007 ES350.

Example:

That's probably not the best example, it's got tumors growing out of the hood. It needs chemotherapy stat.

I had the same thought as the OP a while ago, and this was based on European cars, not US ones.
It's a worldwide problem that all new cars (well, sedans) have a pretty similar design :(

i am glad I am not the only one that is waiting...unfortunately, i think we will be waiting along time... why not have Lamborghini design the car, have the germans engineer the drivetrain, and the japanese put it together with their electronics. then ship it over here :)

There are some modern cars without a terrible rake. I personally love the look of the Audi A8. Granted the thing is enormous, in price and dimensions, but it is so damn sexay. But aside from a couple of Audis that I like there are few cars that I would touch, based soley on looks.

One car that is new(ish) and doesn't suffer too badly from the rake is the 02-05 VW Passat. It also happens to be what I drive as well, so I'm partial to it ;)

I think this is a result of car companies wanting to one up each other on the number sheets. This particular one is an attempt to increase trunk size without increasing the length of the car.

That's white trashed not mexicanized.

It's too high, there's too much brand loyalty stickers.... and does that thing really have stacks AND rear-exiting exhaust?! I'd be embarrassed to even be seen next to it.

i honestly prefer mid/late 80's to early and at the most, late 90's cars. i just like the style they had back then. i don't like the newer smoother designs. i like a little roughness.(my car for example) but yeah. i can feel you on this subject. new cars just don't float my boat.
