So I dusted off the commuter bike today...

Intown traffic was sapping my will to live, so I hit REI over the weekend and picked up a new rack and a few other odds and ends to get the singlespeed I built back in working order.

Door to door in about 30 min and I'm actually in a good mood. 😱

Low point of commute: brainless twat looks right at me, and then pulls out anyway. 😡

High point of commute: clearly braless MILF taking some boxes out to the curb. :awe:

Gonna shoot for at least 4 bike commute per week, weather permitting.

At least you can stop to talk to said MILF if you're on the bike 😛

 for taking the economical route 🙂

This would likely displease my wife, so I'll have to settle for semi-stealthy ogling.

It's honestly more a sanity thing than an economical or environmental thing (although it does rock only having to fill my car every couple weeks if I'm using the bike). The last couple miles before I reach my office tend to be an unbridled disaster and dealing with idiots cutting me off and generally driving like brain-damaged lemmings is just not how I wanted to start my day.

My bike route is mostly neighborhoods and a couple parks not accessible to cars, so it's a nice change of pace.

I need to consider this, no bike yet though

minor detail
My personal recommendation is a mountain bike with slick tires. You are upright (ie- can see things like women about to run you over and boobies), have super strong brakes, and the bigger tires mean you can hop a curb when needed.

I picked up an old rigid Cannondale frame/fork off craigslist for like $50 and rattle-canned it flat black. Built it up mostly with parts I had lying around.

lol, I hear ya on the ogling. Pair of sunglasses works wonders!

This is why I love biking 😀

I just picked up a Marin Muirwoods 29er for my city communiting ... would love to get a surly 1 speed someday, or a drop down bike, but I really like this guy for the hybridness of it.

Day Two: no random boobies, but I did bust one of our local crackheads wandering around a house in the neighborhood. Told him to GTFO, called the cops, and was subsequently late to work. Boss was cool about it after I explained what had happened.

Day Four: Filled my truck up over the weekend. Haven't used it other than taking the kids to school (a two-mile round trip).

Fuel gauge still solidly on the F 😀

Shed any unwanted lbs yet?
I am lighter than I was on monday, but I would wager its mostly just water at this point. I do tend to eat better when I'm riding though so we'll see. I worry about fitness first and the fatness usually takes care of itself in the process.

been commuting for a few weeks now, love it.

20 minutes to work, 25 minutes back.

i wanted to pick up a marin muirwoods 29'er but it was too damn expensive

I rolled past at least a mile of gridlock on my way in today.....giggling the whole way.

Anyone ever been hit? I see close calls with cyclists almost every day, and I'm in a suburban area. It seems these days people do not care about them at all. There is a stretch of country road on my way to work that is 45mph, and there is a very small shoulder. I rarely ever see anyone even swerve slightly when they are passing cyclists, even when there is no oncoming traffic. You can actually see the wind hit them when cars go past. I would be so scared to ride on this road.

Been hit twice. Both times the driver had his head in his ass and didn't see me until I was on their windshield like a giant spandex bug.

..and yes, you are correct in your observations. People generally don't care. It's basically an offshoot of road rage where that extra layer of anonymity (the car) makes people super-confrontational and do insanely stupid shit they'd never do face to face.

It ruins it for me, because I would love to ride to work. My commute is an ideal hilly but not too hilly road that goes through the woods and past farms. It would be so peaceful, but I wouldn't want to be road pizza either.

So I ended up getting almost two weeks out of one tank of gas whereas one fillup per week is pretty much the norm. Commute is 16 miles total each day which is more or less what a gallon of gas gets me in the Explorer. 😎

Good on you, Fausto. I can't bike to work as it's 42 miles one-way. But I am back in the gym on a daily basis. I've shed 7 pounds in 7 days! Of course, that will level out very soon.

Keep on bikin' and do try to get some pics of teh b00beez.

I actually did see her again this am, but alas no gratuitous boob display. 🙁

I'm in the middle of cleaning up a 10 year old Specialized Hardrock I picked up on craigslist a month or so ago with the intention of commuting on it occasionally. I'm also shopping for a 150cc scooter so I can be "that geek" (that gets 80mpg).
