Man! They don't provide steel toe boots at your job? We get $90/yr for boots, I'm in areas where they're required about once a month, but they said to order some. Got a pair of Doc Martin's for ~$135 (before they changed the allowance from $180 every two years to $90/yr) and they're sooooo nice.

Someone once told me that you shouldn't wear steal-toed boots b/c if the steel toe gets crushed, your foot will be mangled and you'll probably have to have your toes amputated.
WTF?
The boots I had were crush-rated at 500PSI. If something drops on my foot hard enough to crush the toe, I was screwed with or without the steel toe!

THe blood keeps comming out, I did clean it up about 2 min before taking the picts. My friend told me I needed to use a pin and poke a hole in there to release the preasure, it does feel a little better now.

You will lose that nail. And the one that grows back will be deformed and your toes will hurt evertime the weather changes. I'd bet you can guess how I'd know that.:frown:

Yeah, if you want to save yourself the discomfort that will most likely happen, go get your toenail removed, lightpants. One of my friends crushed her big toenail, and had it removed because the doctor said if she let it grow back it might cause recurring pain. It's weird...it still looks like there is a nail there (the skin is still indented) from a distance, but when you look close...it's really freaky looking.

I had a similar misfortune although it was a 10 hp kompressor (215 kg) and the boot didn't save it! :Q

The toenail grew back, became infected (abcessed) and I kept ripping it off for a few years until one day it was so swollen I could hardly walk nevermind put a shoe on. My wife took me to the E-room and the doctors flipped out asking me if I liked pain! Radiographs revealed osteo myalytis in the bone! The infection was polymicrobial and required pretty strong antibodies to clear before they could operate. I had surgery, they split the toe in half at the tip and used a saw to cut the bad parts of the bone out!

Now my big toe (they call it the great toe) on my left foot is missing the nail forever, is mostly numb and the top can be pulled like a cow utter because half of the bone is gone! At least they saved the toe because I'm told if they had to take all of it off that I would limp.

Toes are important! I'd recommend consulting with a doctor!

Cheers!

It depends. If you have something run over your foot that will crush the steel insert, then you are screwed either way. @ HD where I used to work, a guy ran over his own foot with a 16000 lb forklift. ( really, don't ask how he did that ) he was not wearing steel toe shoes, and was out for 6 months. he broke like every bone in his foot. I was wearing red-wing steel toed boots and had a student run over my foot with one of the rear tires on a 6000 lb forklift. It wrecked my shoes and pushed the steel plate through the bottom of my shoes and left indentations in the concreete in a horse-shoe shape. My foot was fine, besides a cut along the top from where the plate ended in the shoe. BTW: It was a female I was teaching. Aparently when I say, "Turn right" it meant left. I was also over-ruled when I refused to give her a license. A manager gave her one anyway.

I went back to the store I bought the shoes, and they traded me for another shoe, and put mine on display along with a story of what happened. It was pretty cool :)

If it were the 16000 lb forlift, I probably would not have any toes.

Sounds like I am going to the doctor tomorrow. It doesn't hurt as bad when I prop it up.

I was going to just try beer to heal it. Beer fixes everything, right ?!?!?!

I let mine grow back after I dropped an Arizona bottle on it. It's fine. I did get an ingrown toenail, but I have one on the other foot now, too, so I'm thinking it was unrelated.

Osteomyelitis is nothing to mess around with. Infections in the bone are bad news because bone has very little blood supply, and good blood supply is critical to fighting infection. A fair percentage of bone infections become chronic, they never go away, you just keep suppressing the infection but never get rid of it, sort of like a bad case of athlete's foot that keeps coming back because you don't completely kill the fungus which is harboring under the skin.

I woulda just lopped your big toe off - off with your toe!

So if I pretend I went and saw "jackass the movie" last night, could I say I was trying a stunt and blame them?
