So I decided to install Diablo II...

for nostalgia's sake. It installs fine, does it's video test, recognizes my graphics card, etc. So I try to start up the game, and it crashes completely (black screen for a few sec) with a random error message. I'm currently running WinXP Pro with an ATI Mobility Radeon X1600. Any ideas?

Which API are you using? I thought Diablo II was a GLIDE game, so I presume software rendering is your only choice? Or does it have OpenGL support?

If worse comes to worse, you can always slap in a Voodoo3 PCI and run it in native GLIDE or use a GLIDE wrapper for your ATI card.

Sorry, but the last time I played Diablo II was on my Voodoo2 and later my Voodoo5, iirc.

Sorry, but the last time I played Diablo II was on my Voodoo2 and later my Voodoo5, iirc.

The Test gave me the option to use Direct3D or DirectDraw. I chose the former. During the test it said it was testing 3dfxGLIDE, but no error occurred. Sorry, I'm kind of a video noob.

Hmm, has the Direct3D support then, that should work fine without glide wrappers..... Are you sure you are using the latest version of Diablo II? There was a patch released a few months back for it and it is on Blizzard's site.

Just installed a wrapper, works perfectly. I'll try the patch though. Thx.

I had the same problem a few months ago when I tried to install the game. Although, I finally got mine to run it wouldn't connect to Battle.net, so I gave up.
