No, I didn't taste it. I added some Seafoam brand Trans lube to hopefully clean it out a litle before i drop the pan this or next weekend.

Mine was some sort of sludge last time I changed it. Of course it probably hadn't been changed in 5+ years. Silky smooth shifting afterwards

I hope you have some money set aside, when the transmission fluid is black like that dammage has already been done.
Changing it may help for a while, but its going to need a rebuild eventualy.
What car BTW?

Well, this is my parents old car that was given to me. It has 180k miles on the origanal tranny. Grand Prix SE (3.1L option). I noticed slipping and so I checked the level and it is baadly colored. I have a friend with a press and stuff so I may try to rebuild myself.

Well it shouldn't be too bad as long as you don't use
Seafoam Trans lube. That stuff will really..

I think this car has been screwed since we bought it. I used to deliver ~300 sunday papers in it (still do, BTW) and been doing so for ~2 years, so the suspension is shot. The engine needs a rebuild (summer project) and the tranny needs some fixin. This car isnt' worth the 1k it will take to get a tranny job so I figure do it myself, or make it last ~20k more miles.

When it does break you are REALLY going to wish it was a manual.
Toant: Most manual tranny cars have the gearbox oil in the transmission case.

Not true, most newer Manual Transmissions use ATF or light weight motor oil.
