So these people move into the townhouse in back of mine last month and they've been pretty good until just recently. They are a 30s ish couple with a small boy and a dog.

But recently this dog has gone nuts barking and howling at all times of the day. For 2 nights last week from 2AM to 6AM this dog has been barking non-stop. My neighbors have been yelling at these people to shut the dog up but nothing has been done about it.

I was away this weekend but when I got back apparently nothing seems to have changed. When the dog started up around 10PM I went over there to talk to them about it. From my house (about 10' away from theirs) I can see that all of their lights are on (from ground floor to the third floor). When I go around the front door, I can see into the house from the clear glass window on the side and can see the TV on. The dog then comes up to the window from the yard so the patio door is open and looks disheveled. I rang and waited 10 minutes but no one came out. It was raining so I decided not to wait any longer and went to CVS to get some earplugs for the long night ahead. When I got back, I rang and waited again but no answer. After bumping into some neighbors and discussing the problem with them I found out they too were really POed about the dog situation.

Later that night around 1AM, the dog starts barking and howling again. This time I call the cops and they tell me they'll investigate. At around 2AM, they come to my place to ask me to point out the house and the dog. Apparently, the residents still didn't answer, the lights are all on along with the TV and the patio door is wide open in a downpour. They tell me they can't legally go inside so I'll have to wait until the morning to get the health inspector to check out the dog. The cops call me later around 3AM to get more information but don't tell me what is going on. I could see them with their flashlights going around the perimeter of the house but not entering.

I'm itching to go home now to see what happened. I wonder what could cause someone to leave their house in a situation like that?

Update:

Ok so I just got back and checked out the place.

Strangely, the dog is now gone but the lights are all still on and the TV is going in the living room.

The patio door is still wide open which is strange because there was a torrential downpour this afternoon.

After talking to some neighbors again, they tell me the people living there are a nice, friendly Russian couple.

I got a couple more of them to call the cops if the dog (if he isn't gone) starts up again.

I think we are going to take rotating shifts calling.

-Update 6-3-2004 8:30PM-

So after arriving home. I decided to take a spin around the house again to see if anything changed.

I notice their hallway fan is on now but can't see anyone. I go back to my house and see the neighbor on his balcony. I go on mine and make some small talk. He asks me if I'm the one who called the police and I told him I was one of the many.

Anyway how, he apologizes and tells me he went on vacation for the week and left the dog at home. Since its normally a calm dog he never expected it to go crazy like it did. Told me it won't happen again.

Sorry no gruesome ending but at least there's closure.

Thank you for your attention. You may now clear the area. :D

The dog killed and ate the family and it's barking to lure more unsuspecting humans inside so it can do the same to you. RUN.

Sounds like maybe they were robbed or something. If not, what a bunch of bastards ;)

Our neighbor had these Siberian Huskies that liked to howl whenever they were alone. They got so many tickets, but they never cared. The bittersweet end was when the parents got a divorce and they moved away,

Hmm...sounds pretty weird. Regardless I think you were well within your rights to complain about that dog barking at all hours of the night. It's very disrespectful to their neighbors.

When was the last time you saw your neighbours?

Dishelved dog? Am I thinking what everyone else is thinking?

I keep thinking there could be 3 bodies lying there behind the curtains. Poor little boy... :(

If the patio is wide open I believe the cops can enter. Hopefully the family wasn't robbed and killed.

Oh! Maybe it's like that show Sliders, and the kid had a lab in the basement, accidentally created a wormhole and the whole family is on a parallel earth where pink flamingo's are the dominant species?

The cops can't enter the house in that situation? That's stupid. I'm 99.9% certain that cops here would have entered the house under the circumstances.

I haven't seen them since last week but I was away for the weekend.

The dog is some mutt. I can't tell what it is. It's about 40-50lbs, white, maybe a terrier/pitbull mix. It looks friendly and didn't growl at me through the window. Its tongue was hanging from the side like it bit its tongue, its ears were flopped over and bent and it was covered in mud.

If the house were in that kind of condition for a couple days, with no sign of anybody home, the only situation I can think of that doesn't involve the family dead would be they are on vacation, and too lazy to get somebody to watch their dog.

Check their mailbox... is it full?

If it is still like that today, and nobody has entered the house, I would call the police again, because if they know that it's still in that condition, I would classify it as exigent circumstances and enter the house. There very well could be a problem.

That sounds like a bunch of crap to me. We left our front door open to get a breeze going through the house one day and the cops walked right inside after someone called them to report our door being open. Apparently there is enough probable cause to enter the structure if the door is already open. I don't see why they can't enter the house and look for the occupants especially if nobody is answering.

LOL, this doesn't help you much, but my parents' neighbors were doing the same thing.
When my dad went over to talk to them about it, the woman invited them in, and when my dad mentioned that her dogs are barking late at night, she goes "My dogs NEVER bark!" and no sooner did she say that, one of the dogs started yapping.

What pisses me the hell off is that if that was ME in the house next door and you complained that my movies were too loud, the cops would've broken thru the wall with a SWAT Assault Vehicle and shot me. :disgust:

The patio door is in the back and enclosed by a high wooden fence so they would have to climb over it to get inside. Maybe that is what they meant by not being able to legally go inside.
