so i brought my car into the shop today....

I replaced my starter in my toyota myself about 6 months ago and it was all fine and dandy, now it won't start much... i didn't want to deal with it again, so i'm letting them take care of it, and i get a warranty, fair enough........my power steering pump is leaking, they want me to pay them either $325 to seal the leak, or $450 for a whole new pump......i figure i only buy a $5 bottle of fluid every 6 months, that would save me tons, though i do leak ALL over the place.....maybe do that myself and see what happens or take it to another place. the one i brought it too now is a dealership, normally their prices are really competative and they do good work so we'll see......

My car is leaking power steering fluid too. I have to refill 1/5 of a quad every 3~4 weeks. It is not all over though. I can only see some wet spot once a while on the drive way. I wonder how much it costs me to fix. It drives alright. Occasionally when I feel awkward in making a tight turn, I know it is time to refill the fluid.

You may want to get the whole rack flushed out [or replaced] and the pump replaced [along with a new high-pressure hose], if the steering system is leaking there are metal particles in the rack that don't get replaced if just the pump is replaced, these particles would then get back into the whole system and then cause another leak. That's why sometimes in addition to the pump, some places will reccomend [and push] replacing the rack as well so there is no chance that metal from the old fluid can cause the leak to appear again. I suppose a flush would help, but there's still gonna be some metal even after a flush, and it's gonna leak again.

What kind of toyota? is it a V6?

My car was leaking power steering fluid. I tightened the hose going to it. 🙂

Just get a second opinion. That might not be real expensive if it's damaged and needs replacement.

Yeah, i told the guy i'd take a look around, and he tried to offer me a 10% discount.....told him to shove it.....well not quite like that...i'll look around and either find a place or attempt to do it myself, botch it and then have a place repair it
