So I bought some DVD-Rs at Walmart on Clearance and they don't play in my DVD player. :(

I've been using DVD+Rs since 2002 back when the format war was just starting and they worked fine on my old Sony DVD player which came out before writable DVDs (1999 or 2000). Anyway my DVD+R burner died recently and I got a dual format burner to replace it.

Walmart had a pack of 30 DVD-Rs for $7 so I figured I'd pick them up. Turns out they won't play on my old DVD player. Gives me the error "Cannot play this disc". Guess what they said about DVD+Rs being more compatible was true. Oh well, I use Media Center to upconvert my DVDs now anyway.

There's your problem. All blank DVDs are not alike.

I don't think DVD players can handle DVD-R but DVD+R's with DVD-ROM booktype work just fine DVD players.

Yup, don't buy cheap DVDR's.
I bought some no0name DVDR's from online, and my Sony DVD burner wouldn't detect them, so I couldn't burn to them.
Set top DVD/HDD Recorder works with them though.

you have too many variables to blame it on DVD-R. A) you got a new burner. B) maybe your dvd player just doesn't like dvd-r. C) you bought cheap ass media. D) even if you burn the right booktype, the differences in media piss off a lot of stand alone players.

DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 93% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 80% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD-R and DVD-RW supports single side 4.37 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double sided 8.75 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).

DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 89% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 79% of all DVD Players and most DVD-ROMs.
DVD+R and DVD+RW supports single side 4.37 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 8.75 computer GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).

What brand are the ones from WalMart?

I only buy Taiyos now since having problems with other things. Still relatively cheap at Meritline. 100 for $30 or so.

so i made a thread in general hardware but maybe i'll get a quicker response here.

just bought a dell w/ a dvd burner. it's labeled 16X DVD+/-RW Drive . does that mean it will burn to either formater?

Hmm.. interesting. I've tried 2 DVD players and my Xbox. They've all rejected my DVD-Rs and my DVD+Rs unless I burn with DVD-ROM booktype.

Maybe the DVD-Rs are just crappy. This site says my player is compatible with DVD-Rs but I burned another one and it still doesn't work. They work fine on my roommate's 1 y/o Toshiba DVD player tho.

I have some cheap old Dynex DVD+Rs and they all play fine in my DVD player.

DVD-R's work fine in my Sony DVP-S360 which is a miracle because that thing is damn picky about media. What doesn't work in it though are some Ricoh DVD+R DL discs I bought recently. Work just fine in my mom's Go Video D640 player (rebadged Samsung) though. And yes, not all media is alike. The "king" is still Tayo Yuden however Mitsubishi Chemicals Corp & CMC are damn good too.
