I finally got bored with my games and picked up Oblivion last night. Right now im still running my HIS X1900GT. The resolution I am running is 1440X900 with HDR and AF at 16 via ATI TOOL.

The game does look amazing. But i've seen before that there is an update, patch, or something that makes the grass look better. It looks right now like its been painted on.

What settings do you all recommend me to play this game on? And what do I do to get the MOST eye candy from it?

Right now im getting an average of 35 fps in MOST areas. Althought im only two and a half ours into the game.

Talk to Josh6079 or gersson, they know all the mods for Oblivion that will make it look 10x better than it does out of the box. There are other people, but those two are the only ones I can remember talking about this game in great detail.

OH, and there is no need for the ATI Chuck Patch. My GTS will be here by Tuesday.

I'd prefer not to reinstall the game. So these mod's will work with ATI or NV ?

Wow I was amazed at the difference from looking at the World taxture screenshot. I have a feeling I'll need at least a 8800GTS 640MB to fully enjoy it as my X1900XT 512MB is struggling at 1680x1050 with HDR+AA

I have never really found a need to change the textures in Oblivion...the game looks fine to me out of the box.

Your really missing out than, Qarl's Texture Pack 3 makes this game one of the prettiest games to date, simply stunning :D

I just got it too... Of course I'm a terrible gamer... How do you get out of the frackin' first dungeon? The damn rats keep killing me! Your frame rate sounds good, by the way.

look for mods to make it play like Morrowind

oblivion out of the box gets old, fast
no challenge when everyone levels with you and everyone has the rarest stuff in the game as basic after a couple hours....*sigh*

LoL...Are you even using a weapon to fight off the rats ? Or did you miss the Katana on the floor next to the body ? Actually you should have a few weapons by now. H3ll, I was even over-encumbered three times in the first dungeon.

UPDATE : After installing Qarl's Texture Pack 3.......I would have to say, this is the best looking game ive ever seen. However, my framerates have dropped. But that should be remedied on Tuesday with my brand new GTS.

BTW, the 8800 series cards do support HDR + AA at the same time correct ?

While I agree with Starbuck that the game looks pretty nice right outta the box, these texture packs, add-ons, tweaks, mods, and changes make it so much better.

I also have an XT (X, actually, but close enough) and play at 16x12 with 4xAA and 16xHQAF. With Qarl's TP3, AEVWD, 4096LODs, phinix water, illumination within, etc... the ol' XTX wets itself. Luckily, Oblivion isn't one of those games that I feel I need 30+ fps for it to be playable. A GTX would help greatly, but I've noticed my system memory usage hit almost 2.5gigs (I only have 2), and my video mem usage hit 800mb (I only have 512). I think I'm gonna wait til the 89xx and R600 hit and make my decision then.

Lol. Thought that might be the case. Gotta get used to the mechanics. This is the sequence immediately after you meet the emperor, right? Like I said, I'm lame at games (I usually have other priorities), but this one is something I'm willing to work at. Wanted to do something else that would exploit two monitors. Thanks for the tip.

Did you change the resolution between those first two pics, because it seems the performance fell rather dramatically...

Yes, I did change the resolution. In the normal pic, the res was 1280 X 1024....and in the second pic, it was 1440 X 900.
