with a docking station. I have my laptop stay on the docking station with the battery in the laptop all the time. Since when the laptop on the dock it's charging the battery.

My friend said it's bad for the battery if i leave it like that all day long.

Is he right? Should i disconnect the dock's ac power adapter?

By the way, i have a Toshiba Portege 7200cte.

i believe that he's right.. you shouldn't leave a battery on charge if it's already charged

trickle charging wasn't good for nicads. the maker probably claims li-ions can take it but i don't trust them most of the time.

if u'll leave the laptop on the docking station for a long period of time or most of the time, just fully charge the battery and take it out. Then, drain and fully charge it every 1-2 months.

You should take out the battery if it's already fully charged and your laptop is plugged in outlet. It lessens the life of the battery or so I heard.

I believe most modern battery chargers have overcharge protection, so if the battery is fully charged, it stops trying to charge it. But to get maximum life out of you battery, you should fully discharge (or close to it) the battery before charging it. Li-Ion batteries have a life span of about 3000 charge cycles, charging a battery from 90% to 100% is one cycle, as is charging from 0 to 100%. So if the battery doesn't need to be charged, don't charge it.

I agree...Its not the best idea. That said I don't think it as as big of a problem with Li-Ion's as it was in the days od NiCads. Look and see what your battery is. Then if you never take it out of the dock, just take the battery out and put it in the case that why when you travel you can just pop the battery in.

Thanks for all the advices guys. i will take my battery out when i DOCK it then. :)

Rossman, i got it for $680. Picture here

P3 600Mhz.
192MB SDRam
12GB HD
Docking station w/6x DVD and floppy drive.
The Li-ion battery that comes with it takes pretty good charge i think, about 3 hours of normal usage...surfing net, neffing etc.
The laptop is in excellent comestic condition, no scratches...at least i didn't notice any. :)
1-inch thick. :D

Not the best deal in the world but i'm satisfied so far.

As long as you're happy that's what's most important.

Congrats!

I heard that you should never completely discharge some type of battry forgot which one it was, because it has a memory in it and if you fully discharge it, it will lose it's memory.

Talked to a Dell tech the other day about same thing. He said their official stance is that it's fine to leave the battery in all the time.

He then said that in his personal experience, that if it's going to stay plugged into the wall, to take the battery out. There shouldn't be a problem, but why take the risk of the overcharge not working, etc.

I had a 315CDT Toshiba that has a dead power supply and is probably linked to leaving the battery in and plugging it in all the time. Eventually overcharged and got the laptop goofy.
