Its HD, NOT HD-READY.
and my questions are as follows
i have regular basic cheap cable, provided by my apartment complex, am i going to be able to recieve HD broadcasts, like on ESPN, and super bowl and such, or do i need an HD cable box.

and to get it over the "AIR" i would just need a HD antenna right?

You will need an HD cable box. If there are stations broadcasting over the air in HD, then all you need is an antenna, yes.

If the TV has a QAM tuner, you should be able to receive the regular "local" channels in HD, as they are generally sent unencrypted. However, stuff like ESPN is encrypted and does indeed require a cable box to decrypt/view. If it's just a standard ATSC tuner, then yes, you could get your locals with an antenna (assuming you could get a decent signal).

I had Digital Cable with Time Warner........ but not HD .

I had an HD tv, and called them up to complain my picture was crappy. They upgraded me to free HD tv, free box and everything.

That might be your best bet.

Probably need to upgrade to the digital service and rent an HD box from them. Or you could buy an OTA reciever and use an anntennae to get all the OTA channels (cbs, abc, fox, upn(?), wb) all broadcast HD during primetime and broadcast a digital signal throughout the day so if you have a good signal it will come in perfectly.

Note, though, that he has an HDTV, not an HD-ready one.

You shouldn't need anything but an antenna to receive OTA HDTV broadcasts. My mom recently bought the excellent Sony KD-24XBR960, and she gets 10 or more local digital channels over an antenna, with a fair bit of the programming in HD. In particular, the local PBS affiliate has a lot of HD programming, which is great stuff.

I highly recommend the Zenith Silver Sensor indoor antenna, which is one of the best and costs around $20 at Amazon and elsewhere.

I'm about to order an HDTV tuner for my PC for $99 which has QAM. If I need an HDTV indoor antenna that's the model I'll probably buy. I've seen it for $20 at Buy.com with free shipping code found at your favorite Hot Deals site :)

I'm getting TW in the fall. So you're saying they gave you their digital HD package and the box for free?

since you've gotten the help that you need, i'll pose this question:

shouldn't you have figured this out before buying the TV?

btw, no such thing as an HD antenna...rabbit ears can pick up HD.
just that an amplified antenna is recommended.
