I am worried about this. This was an ebay auction explicitly listed AS-IS. Paypal somehow rules the buyer should get a refund. This is bullsh*t and I will close my paypal acct if I have to...

So.... Can they just take $$ right from my checking acct thats connected?

Is this one of those "untested" as-is items that you really know doesn't work, so you didn't bother to test it?

Listen to him. While paypal has no permission to raid your bank account, you did give them permission to forward your account to a collection agency for deliquency. Once it hits, say goodbye to your credit rating for the next 5 years.

They cannot touch your bank accounts. Anybody who actually reads their TOS knows this. They can freeze or remove any money in your PayPal account, including putting your account into a negative balance and pestering you repeatedly by e-mail to zero your debt.

Them forwarding the debt to a collection agency is a hit or miss affair. Sometimes PayPal does it, sometimes they don't. I still haven't heard of one account of them actually ruining somebody's credit rating, but anything is possible. From my personal experience, they never did forward the "debt" to collections (it was over $500, but less than $1000), and nothing has touched my credit score. I got e-mails reminding me about it, but they eventually stopped after about 6 months.

Read up. I avoid PayPal as a seller, and only use it for small purchases as a buyer.

Tips if you're going to open a new account:

1) Never keep a balance.
2) Spend any balance immediately.
2) Never try to withdraw your balance to your bank account or request a check.

PayPal and eBay aren't stupid. They can match your old and new accounts based on a plethora of user data they collect on every single one of their users.

If you keep a balance, they will freeze your new account and the balance along with it. If you don't spend any balance you have immediately, they will freeze your account and your balance along with it. And if you try to withdraw money into your bank account or request a check, they will deny the withdrawal/request, freeze your account and your balance along with it.

Just my personal experience, anyways. I have a few active PayPal accounts, and a few frozen ones.

Paypal tried to screw me and forwarded the debt I owed to a collection agency. I sent the agency a letter stating to contact my lawyer and they never did. My credit score is a 785.

Why not?

Those tips were only for his specific situation...i.e. if you have a previous bad PayPal account and you open another one. You can withdraw all you want if you're in good standing with PayPal, but if you've had previous frozen accounts (like the OP may soon have if he doesn't settle PayPal's claim), then withdrawing will only alert them to freeze your new account as well.

You can, but PayPal won't let you get one unless you have an active account in good standing for a certain amount of time, plus you might get into a sticky situation that WILL let them fvck with your credit rating.

Also it costs $1.00 per transaction IIRC, I have one but rarely use it.

Yeah if you're trying to avoid fucking up your credit via paypal, getting a paypal debit/credit card would be a surefuire way to do so.

nope - paypal is not a registered bank, so they cannot touch your savings or checking
