First off
What are you running computer wise?

IE...

ram processor speed, hdd size, windows or linux.

Are you intrested in science, mathmatics, life sciences, cryptography, or puzzles and games.

I am running Find-a-Drug, looking for cures for hiv, cancer etc..

you can find all the links to the projects Here

Depending on what your intrests are and what hardware you are running, we can give a better suggestion on the projects that work best.

If you are running fairly new hardware pretty much every project is available to you.

a list of projects team anabndtech is currently working on can be found here

Wow man, nice rig!!

You can run any DC project with that setup...but I'd like to suggest Find-A-Drug :)

It's easy on the resources, doesn't interfere with your normal computer use, including gaming. It's also about solving real human problems

Welcome to the TeAm, Son of a N00b :)

I have to plug Folding@Home. It is a medical research DC project from Stanford University that studies how proteins mis-form to find possible cures for a multitude of diseases including cancer, Parkinsons, Alzheimers, etc.

It is a non-profit that shares research with the rest of the scientific community.

The TeAm is currently ranked 25. It should be rank much higher in this great project. We need your help!

Whatever you choose, have fun with it

I'm also a Folding @ Home guy. I did SETI for a couple years before that. I strongly suggest that you pick a project that does some legit good work, rather than simple number crunching. I think, but am not sure, that the SETI project has completed all its work units and is merely rechecking everything now.

Things I like about Folding@Home:-it's run by a university, is nonprofit (your computing power won't contribute to someone else getting rich off a patent generated by the project), it has a very nice and active group here and it's work units vary in size considerably (so you can have good days and bad). I'd check it out and also look at the Find Drug FreeWolf mentioned.

I'm running Folding @ Home and Seti @ Home. Any TeAm here would greatly appreciate your added resources! We can always use additional team members on the Folding TeAm as we seem to be stuck between 190-198 active daily crunchers.

F@H for me. I thought about FaD but wasn't sold on the non-profit company aspect of it. I have always preferred academic institution projects due to their openness to the scientific community with the results.

Running one or multiple BOINC-projects is a good choise, the client have built in service-install, multi-cpu-support, cache, remote monitoring/controlling, multi-project-support and crediting based on actual cpu-usage so stats is cross-project-comparable. Cache-size, resource-share if multi-project and so on is configurable.

Currently available projects ranges from space-sciences like SETI@home and Einstein@home, climate-changes with Climateprediction.net, and protein-related diseases with Predictor@home.

Some of the future BOINC-projects currently in various alpha/beta-stages are Astropulse, BURP, Folding@home, Lattice, LHC@home, Planetquest.

I would suggest Folding@Home as well.
Great cause.
Awesome bunch of knowledable folks, with steady, daily stats rehash by NatetheGreat,
and regular races.

Find a Drug hands down, quite a few members here have discovered anti-cancer properties. I consider any medical research program to be of the greatest value for all of us. Maybe we wont find the cures soon but our efforts may help save the lives of our own grandchildren. Human life should always be the priority.........my 2 cents

No. THey're currently splitting tapes recorded in Jan. & Feb. of this year. Most of my recent WUs are from late '04 & early '05, though you'll still get older ones that need to be rechecked by the newer client.

Son of a N00b,
I'm sure you'll find something you'll like as there are so many projects to choose from nowdays. Even though the SETI Classic is winding down & getting ready to transition into S@H BOINC, here's the homepage if you're interested in space sciences. THey've done other research besides looking for ET with the data they've gathered.
S@H BOINC
S@H Classic

Good luck & have fun.

Another vote for F@H from me. I have been running it for about a year and it gets really addicting after you start accumulating some serious points...And while i'm here I'll pick a fight with the FAD guys and tell you why you shouldn't join them. A few months ago I thought I'd join another project. Because i'm only interested in real world problems I thoguht FaD would be good. So I clicked on their thread and asked some questions about the project, but I didn't get a single response. Maybe i'm just a special case, but if you decide to join Folding at home, and have questions or problems you'll probably get an answer in a few hours. If you join F@H i'll even change a few of my rigs over to your user name for 2 weeks to get you started.

That's very surprising to hear JeffCos as well as disappointing for there is any number of us who are always ready to try and answer any questions we can about FaD. I even have a link to a short article on how to setup FaD in my sig as well as a link to the Rebel Alliance website where we have set up a forum for the Anandtech FaD team.
I'm sorry we failed to see your question and to try and help you.
I'm know anyone on the team if they had saw your question would have did their best to try and give you a hand but unlike the Folding team we are a small team with only around 40 or so active members so I guess we fell short in your case.

ive always like the search and have followed SETI, but i also like the idea of the folding, i took genetics in HS and i like the idea of it and it really interests me more than crunching numbers....

i'll definately check it out...i will be running it at night on my rig in my sig, and possibly my back up rig

amd3700 venice OC'ed
6000gt
gigabyte nforce 3 ultra mobo
1 74 gig raptor
1 gig of OCZ VX

going to the folding page now...

EDIT: about to sign up for folding, how exactly do i make sure i am on the Anand team with you fine people?

we are team 198, the setup is alittle different depending on whether you are going to be using the graphical version or the text only console version. IF you go to the F@H stats thread there are a few setup guides that should help you along.

LOL, I guess I am the only one who is still doing RC5. I know it is not as practical as some of the other DC projects running right now. Especially considering the futility of RC5-72, (over 800 years to check the keyspace at yesterdays rate :p). Like everyone has said though, have fun with whatever you decide to do. I know I am having fun checking 2.6 trillion keys a day. :D

I am sorry Jeffcos...

I saw your question, but I failed to answer it.

here is the post guys http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=39&threadid=1558957&enterthread=y

In it you asked how it ran as a second instance next to f@h, I haven't tried this.

You also asked how it would run on a 3.2e already running 2 instances of f@h. I am not sure as I have never ran 3 instances on my 3.2e.

Please note:
you posted in ross's stat thread, during a time in which we lost a teammate, and I did mean to post back but life interupted, Sorry.

Why didn't you just bump the thread? or even post again though?

Either way you are right in that you were ignored, but please realize it wasn't intentional.

And please accept my apology.

If you aare still intrested, We would love to have you join us, If not, Still glad to have you as a teammate :p

Hopefully there are no hard feelings.

"I'm considering adding FaD to my folding efforts. How memory intensive is the program and how well would it run on a p4 2.66 already running 1 instance of F@H and a p4 3.2HT already running 2 isntances of F@H? "

A little late but Find a drug uses very little memory . If the 2.66 is hyperthreaded you could run one instance on it and get some production out of it. On the 3.2 which is already running 2 instances of folding it would stall since the Folding program would take all the cpu cycles.

Sorry, my post was directed at Jeffcos, I apologize for the off topic opost.

Seti still has the most users, but may not still have the most active users.

Your rig (finally figured out how to see it lol) should do great on any project you decide on. :p

a list of the projects and some of the requirements.

Welcome aboard Son of a N00b. I would choose the one that intrests you and give it a spin.

Gotta run

Mike
