I just got in on the CircuitCity Wireless Networking deal and was configuring my wireless network. When I ran the "Site Survey" function on the SpeedStream Wireless LAN Utility, FIVE networks showed up and mine was the only one with WEP enabled. A couple of them have next to zero signal strength, but there is some guy with a Linksys router justing asking for me to go snooping. Sadly, I don't really know what to do...

Did you get the Siemens wireless router today or yesterday? Because if they have more in stock, I'm gone.

Check if he even changed the default password on the router, then have a talk with them.

Dunno where you are but several stores in the Louisville/Lexington area show them in stock

Did you click the link to add Express locations? It will take you a page where you enter your Zip Code. Then, select up to 3 stores in your area.

The documentation blows, but I can nutshell it for you:

1. Set-Up router
turn off the cable modem (they don't tell you to do this)
plug in router and install WAN and LAN cables (I have several desktops still using wires)
turn on cable modem
open browser and go to IP address in manual
run set-up wizard.

Your router is now good to go. Don't forget to enable WEP.

2. Installing USB adapter
insert CD and run set-up utility
disable current network connection
plug in adapter to USB port
open up Wireless LAN Utility (in systray)
click "Re-Scan"
open Site-Survey Tab
select your network
open "Encryption Tab"
set appropriate encryption settings
click OK

You should be good to go

You need a cable to put a signal into the router's WAN port and then cables to run to any computers with NICs. For your PCs with wireless cards/adaptors, you don't need and cables.

(They are on a wireless network, after all.. ;))

Are you using a wireless router? if not, you need an access point.

this shouldn't surprise you
most people buying that stuff at Best Buy/CompUSA don't know anything about security or networking for that matter

they should put a prize in the box, like cracker jack to get more people to buy those things

Select the network then click on connect. If you're using XP it will tell you that the network isn't secure and ask if you still want to connect to it.

The only other thing is if they turned on MAC filtering, but that's pretty easy to get around.
