I am going to pass this round of pc upgrading. There isn't anything my current rigs won't render properly. I have never owned a console so my knowledge is limited. The kids need a new DVD player so I can kill 2 birds with one stone here.

What controllers, etc are recommended ? Are there must have upgrades or anything I need to know about ?

Enlighten me please. 😉

Thanks,

Dan

You'll need to purchase at least one extra controller (comes with one). DVD playback kit ($30). RF adapter if you're hooking it up to an older TV.

Gamewise - Halo & Splinter Cell are must haves no matter you're age or what type of games you like. How old are your kids? We can make some recommendations based off their age - although Halo and SC can be violent they're fun games regardless of age. (Although SC can be frustrating for the youngins)

Yea don't buy it.

If you're going to buy an IBM-compatible, build your own using the newest NForce chipset and P4. Don't waste your time with an outdated nforce board and a celeron. 😛

You have to buy the DVD kit, otherwise you can't play DVDs with it.

You won't need a memory card. It saves everything to the hard drive.

Stick with Microsoft brand controllers. I prefer the S controller. It has a better button layout.

Oh, and don't waste your time listening to X-Box bashers whose only argument is that it uses similar components to that of a PC.

Seriously, if you have broadband, get X-Box Live and pick up games like MotoGP, NFL2K3, Mechwarrior, NHL2K3, and Ghost Recon. Hours of enjoyment right there.

Thanks but I will get one NIB.

My kids are 8yrs, 5yrs and 2yrs(he won't be playing much just yet).

I'm kind of tired of the pc upgrade rat race right now. Being realistic for once, I really don't NEED to at this point. The kids can get their new DVD player, some gaming goodness and no hassles for dad for around the price of a top o the line graphics card. Seems a better way to spend the dollars right now.

Agreed.

I spent two hours playing MechAssault online last night with a few friends and it is so much damned fun.

Screw those people that have nothing better to do than talk crap about how gaming consoles suck. Idiots.

Whats a mod-chip ?

Bigger hard drive ? Sounds like I am moving from one rat race to another.😛😕😉

a modchip is an add-on chip that you have to solder on the mainboard (well sort of but you get the point when you see some pics).
With the right software it gives you the ability to do a lot more then the standard x-box was designed for (region free DVD, DiVX, MP3, playing backups😉 and much more). The bigger HD is not strictly needed but it makes it a bit easier if you have a lot of stuff (read: a lot of "backups")

I don't know if it's illegal in the USA (over here it's not) and you lose your 1 year warranty if you start messing around with it but personally I don't care about that

more info here

edit: even without a mod it's a great console

enjoy

If Bestbuy is still doing it, apply for their CC online and you'll get 24 months interest free financing. Thats how I bought mine, why use your money when you can use theirs for free?

That being said, I'd get halo for sure and 3 extra controllers. Stick to MS brand controllers, and in my experience, the mad catz ones were the same price anyway. You'll need a DVD kit of course, so that's another $30.

You get two pretty good, kid friendly games with the xbox. Halo might be a little on the violent side, but it's lots of fun in multiplayer (co-op is good too) and it's not all THAT bloody.

I have had my Xbox for about 8 months now, and I still play games on that more than my PC... Seriously, it's at least a 10:1 ratio.

I agree with everyone else... The MS "-S" controller is the best, and you'll want the DVD kit. If you have broadband, Xbox LIVE rocks!

Imho, Halo and Splinter Cell are awesome games, but aren't for the kids. At least, I don't let my boys play them... But I guess that's your decision as a parent.

My boys love: Harry Potter, SSX Tricky, MechAssault, Quantum Redshift, Rayman, etc...

I'm in love with: Halo, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, MechAssault, NHL Hitz 2003, NHL2k3, NFL2k3, NFL Fever 2003, Rallisport Challenge, etc...

I agree with suggestions to stick with Microsoft-brand controllers. Lots of people like the smaller S-controller, but I've never had a problem with the regular one. You should probably get one of each and try them out, before you buy more. Although for your kids, they'd probably need the smaller one.

Also, if your kids are into sports games at all, check out arcade-style games like NFL Blitz and NHL Hitz. They're easier to play than the realistic simulation games, which makes them better for kids (and lots of grown-ups too 🙂 ).

Am I the only one who likes the MadCatz controller better than the MS S-controller?

Also, get Metal Gear Solid 2. I found it at BB yesterday for $30, and next to it they had a stack of coupon books that expire March 8 with a $5 off Metal Gear, so I got it for $25 plus tax. For that price it can't be beat!

How old are trhe kids? Dad, even you will like Halo. I have the Xbox, came with DVD controller and two games ,some roller skating anime game, and a wicked race car game. for the grandkids,I went and bought ty the tazmanian boomarang dood( Ty is in the title, the rest is my embelishment) and buffy vampire slayer. Myolder sports buff kids play NFLfever2003. That is an awsome footlball game.

Invest in extra controllers and Xbox live.

i actually prefer the original controller over the s-type one, but i still bought 2 s-types because most people prefer that one when i play with other people.
