So I am assigned with a less-preferred seat at my company's annual dinner...

the not-too-bright HR lady assigned to sit in a table with the R&D department, whom I am not familiar with. I really wanted to sit with my friends or at least co-worker I am closer with. So, should I [cross out]throw a tantrum[/] demand a seat change with the lady; or just quietly switch seat at the party? I am guessing it will be mess that night and people WILL get switch around anyways.
the second method is far smoother, but yield no guarantee.
The first method will probably get me the desired seat, but yield no absolute guarantee neither.

so what should I do?

[edit] pardon my exaggeration and don't take my word too literally :)

Why throw a tantrum? Are you 8 years old?

well yes, I exaggerated a bit about the tantrum part; i don't think it will give me any good result afterall...

however, in this company, if you ask nicely, it means you don't really care about the situtation, and your request will generally be ignored.

Personally I would just take the seat. Get to know the guys from the R&D, and like you said, people will probably move around anyway...

you should throw a tantrum and post the results here. remember, our entertainment should be a primary concern.

I agree. Expand your horizons...get to know more people in the corp. You never know when it will come in handy.

It's called networking. Get to know the R&D people. They probably have a lot of interesting "stuff" to talk about.

yes, networking is certainly crucial, but I can do on other occasions, that night is rather special and I want to spend it with my friends.

Did everyone get seated randomly, or is it only you who is getting punked by the HR lady? Maybe they are testing you to see if you're a team player who will sit there because it's what the company assigned you to do, OR, maybe she just knew you wanted to sit with your friends, and decided to fck with you for some unknown reason...OR, maybe there is some unknown cosmic force at work here, and seats got assigned at random, by seniority, or ???

Gawd, either live with the seat, or stay home...throwing a tantrum wouldn't look good in any company...WHAAA, I wanna sit with my friends....I don't wanna sit with those smelly R&D guys, and you can't make me, you can't make me, you can't make me.....

At my MAJOR corporate dinner we did not have assigned seatings. Each employee would sit in a booth and then if you got along with a person they would sit next to you. I sat next to Festes and Kristen. I got to know why a parent named their child after a western cowboy character television and also talked about Kristen's prom. The good part was the food was OUTSTANDING with excellent tacticity and aroma.
