I was in Best Buy the other day looking at video cards for a friend who wanted to build a system. Then, this family comes in looking for a basic computer. They told the salesman that they wanted to get something that they could go online with and play quake. They seemed interested in the compaq that was a celeron 2.7 or 2.8ghz. The salesman told them that the computer was too slow, and would crash the internet. Instead, he brought them over to this Alienware system that was like double the price, and was a P4 2.8, and told them that was what they needed.
The person looking to buy a computer said that he would rather buy the Compaq since all he needed was a basic system, and would upgrade the video card if needed, which would still be like $600 cheaper than the alienware system. He picked out a Raedon SE video card, but was stopped by the employee and was told that it would not work since it was an SE card, and that SE cards only work with HT processors and flat-panel monitors. I could not stop laughing at what this salesperson was saying.
So the salesman went somewhere to get something, and I told the family who came to get a computer that the Compaq would do everything they needed. I also told them that the salesman was full of crap. They thanked me, and decided to get the Compaq.
The salesman must have told his supervisor on me, since the supervisor tapped me on the shoulder and told me that I could not talk to customers, in which I told him that I was exercising my right of free speech
. He then asked me to leave, so I asked him for his name. He covered his nametag, and then asked me why I wanted his name. I told him that i was going to report him and his store to the BBB and other consumer protection agencies for shady business tactics, basically blatantly lying to a customer to make a sale on a higher priced item. The supervisor then walked away.
There has to be something illegal with what they are doing. I know it is not uncommon for employees to stretch the truth a bit, but making stuff up is totally wrong. I cant imagine how many people they have conned into buying a really expensive system.
<End of rant>
