So how shy of a person are you?

I live in basically an off campus dorm..a lot of the people in there are freshman, I'm one of the few older (I'm a sophmore, lived there last year). Anyway, unless I'm going down for dinner with my roomate or one friend that I have that lives here (the rest live elsewhere), I'm either stuck eating alone or going up to talk to a random person. Usually in the morning, I bring a newspaper and sit down and read it. A lot of people will eat by themselves, so I sometimes join them for lunch or dinner and try to strike up a random conversation with them, although this is obviously kind of awkward. Of course, its much less awkward to just eat by yourself, but that kinda seems antisocial..so what would you do?

I'm acutally a pretty social person, but I always use to eat by myself my sophomore year when I was living in a mostly freshman dorm. It just never seemed worth it to me. I made a few friends here and there, but I didn't make a habit of chatting up random people

well, don't know if you would call it shy or not but I am petrified to speak in front of an audience. I get very nervous, sweat profusely, feel sick at my stomach and will throw up. I've even gone out of my way to not take a public speaking class at school by picking a different career that didn't require the class. Yeah, I know, it's bad. I get nervous even thinking about having to do it. I don't have any problems if it's just a few people though. Not sure wth the problem is.

I'm a bit shy. At school I was quite social, but now that I'm working, I'm surrounded my lots of people that bore me to tears, so I'm generally asocial (not anti-social). Anyway, my point is that there's a big difference between being social/having friends and being shy. They're certainly not mutually exclusive.
