I haven't kept up with PC hardware for a while. I'm moving and I found my old desktop machine.... It's missing a video card, I think I sold it. It has an epox 8RDA+ motherboard, 256mb of DDR RAM (PC2100?), and an athlon XP 1600+ chip in it. I've also got a 160GB HDD I can use in it.

Is it worth keeping and throwing a new video card in to play some games, or for newer games should I jsut throw it out and start over?

It's definitely NOT 'throw-out' worthy. It's still good enough for everyday needs. Give it to your parents or someone.

The mobo is fine, and can support DDR400.

Dump the PC2100 and the CPU, pop in a gig of PC3200 and an XP 2700+, plus a 9700 Pro and you'll easily rock new games.

Toss another 256 ram in there and a radeon 9600 for $150 for the two and you should be able to play all but maybe Doom3 at lower resolutions (800x600) at a respectible frame rate. Hell, Doom3 might even play at 800x600 pretty well.

I've got almost the exact same setup and I can play pretty much anything that has come out recently pretty well. Haven't given Doom3 a play though.

jebus that is the computer that i'm using to type this now.

built it myself 2 years ago. athlon 1700 on a soltek KT333. 3 sticks of kingston PC2100 -> 768mb. a 64mb gforce3 Ti500 and a 17inch CRT. no dvd burner...

i was so happy when i got it. it plays CS decent enough...

i'm still proud of it. more ram made it really zip through startup and loading whatever.

as for your comp i'd get a mid-range video card and maybe a stick of 512mb RAM and it'll be set.

Not even remotely close..

I have P3 III 800 w/ 640 ram ( XP )

And it runs like a CHAMP... Faster than most 2 and some 3ghz BLOATED machines I see at work...

Love it..

:D
