I have no idea, mainly I just think it's ridiculous that are mods are unpaid and the forums have so many technical issues on a site that is in all likelihood a profit center for anand.
If it's a profit center then why wouldn't he do everything he could to keep it the best he could?

Real costs of keeping up a forum are fairly small

-Bandwidth/hosting
-Mods
-People to do DB stuff

There isn't any pic hosting here, so bandwidth costs should be fairly small. The mods are not paid. I suspect the DB people are unpaid or poorly paid.

So does someone have their hand in the cookie jar or what? How can a huge forum like this, with ads like we have here, have unpaid volunteer staff AND still not enough money to pay for whatever upkeep isn't happening? It just doesn't feel right.

This isn't how a business works. (though, it is well know to be how business fails)

No real point in talking about this. There is nothing the mods can do, and there are essentially only one or two people here who have contact with Anand.

Whatever Anand and the staff at the main site think about the forums, apparently it has been running well enough these years that it doesn't look like it's ever going to be really fixed.
I always forget who the real admin of the forums is (it's damn confusing with all the additional titles), but they appear to be extremely busy with other things or fending off hackers or whatever keeps them from fixing things like server synchronization issues.

I think the big issue is that the administrator(s) aren't active members. If they were, they probably would care more about the random errors and downtime we experience.

Funny thing is, most other forums out there does not actually pay the mods/admins as it's done as a hobby thing so the only costs are the server. Let's say, $200/mo for a colo. That's basically the cost. You can lease but then it cost's more for the type of server needed. So it's cheaper to get a server that cost's 5k and then colo it for like $200/mo or even less. Since this forum does not host images or anything disk space is not really a huge need, same with bandwidth. The biggest needs are cpu and ram. Look at forums like [H] they have the same amount of traffic as this one and they don't have any issues like here. I guess Anandtech is not [H]ard enough. :D

Lol, pretty much. :D

In a way, it's a good thing that the staff of the main website aren't too focused on the forums, because maybe that allows them to focus more on the articles and technology coverage. AnandTech is absolutely the best news and review site for computer hardware that I've ever frequented, so it's somewhat forgivable that these forums aren't quite up to the standards of other forums.
