So how long before the Wii surpasses the 360 in sales?

If it keeps on it's current role then I say a year, maybe 2 max. I just don't get the hype, I owned one and wasn't impressed. Wii Sports was so gimmicky, you can't even control the player! And I think the line about the "ultimate party console" is bs and just snowballs because other people hear other people saying it and it gets repeated. Multi on the 360 is just as fun if not more fun.

(360 fanboy here) Shooters, 3rd party titles, online play, 360 is great.

However, with 2 or 3 people over, I could see the Wii being more fun with a group.

I could see it surpassing the 360, but as much as I love Nintendo - the Wii bored me surprisingly quickly. I would honestly rather play a more "conventional" game system like the 360, at least outside of a party get-together.

Wii is outselling the XBOX 360 2:1 worldwide right now, and already has half the XBOX 360s installed base despite being released for only 4 months (compared to 16 months for the XBOX 360). Worldwide sales figures.

If sales stay as they currently are, Nintendo will catch up in roughly 10 months.

In other news, the Wii is outselling the PS3 3:1 worldwide.

Very soon, the fact that nintendo hasn't even caught up with the initial demand and is selling record amounts is a very good sign.

I disagree about the Wii being gimmicky. I think Wii Sports, and even Wii Play are a lot of fun, and I think it's only a matter of time before we start seeing titles with more full-fledged motion controls (more similar to Wii Sports Baseball 1:1 bat movement). That said, I didn't buy my Wii because I think it'll be a great "party console"... I bought it because I want to play great 1st party games like Zelda, Mario and Metroid. Console gaming, for me, is mostly about single player, followed by split-screen multiplayer.

I'm really surprised by how well the Wii is selling. I thought for sure it wouldn't be THAT popular. My brother bought one on release day and we've enjoyed it for hours every day since then. Yesterday we had four of us playing tennis for about three hours. Now, he's moving out of state on Thurs and taking the Wii with him, so come Thurs. there will be one additional tally under the "number sold" column.... one for me!

My house never has less than 5 people in it (I have the big place with all the booze) so we totally put the Wii to good use. Constantly.

Its also antisocial. Multiplayer over the net is NOT the same thing as having 4 people in the same room.

I think the Wii will have a dominating lead by next holiday season, sales might slow down (but so should the other systems) however the Wii has some pretty strong titles coming out that should keep its pace ahead of the competition.

At least a year, if ever. I don't think the Wii can continue to sell as well as it does without more games, particularly third-party games. They also need to get their act together with online play.

Man... Wii Sports is basically an intro to the control scheme that turned out to be immensely popular. Did you really expect them to give away five FULL-FEATURED games with the console? Wii Sports gives you a glimpse of what you'll see in full-featured games in the future. And it's quite good for what it is.

Edit: And people say it's a great party system because it has party games, and because it's easy for a non-gamer to play Wii games.

It's better than a "Cola War" like we had in the 80s.

You can also play the 360 with people in the same room. Just yesterday I was at a friend's house playing a 4 person wrestling game.

However, I live by myself, so when i'm at home I play against my friends or total strangers online. Choosing to play online instead of against the computer is not antisocial. You make it seem like people are playing online and ignoring the person next to them, which rarely happens.

Me and my friends use to do 12 person, split-screen Halo on 3 TVs. I'm not a huge Halo fan, but my god that was some of the funnest gaming ever. Playing with other people in the same room just makes it more fun. Screw online console gaming. I really have no interest in it. I game online on my computer.

That's a pretty bold statement to make, especially considering the 360 lineup for the rest of this year. They pretty much have a "must have" title coming out each month until the end of the year.

If MS plays their cards right theres a chance the Wii will never surpass the 360.

A 360 price cut would seriously dent Wii sales.

Right, and after a year to come out with "must have" titles, Nintendo still promptly rose to the front runner of consoles sold. I never said Nintendo is going to explode past everyone else but the fact that they also have "must have" titles coming out should mean that their sales continue to stay on pace ahead of the competition. If the 360 didn't have any future "must have" titles then it would quickly fall out of pace.

Like it or not the Wii obviously appeals to a larger user base than the 360 meaning it has more people it can sell to, a clear advantage and part of the reason I think it will win this generation. The fact that Sony and Microsoft both try to play it down as not part of their true competition is proof of this - they're vying to win a consolation prize by winning the so called hardcore gamer market. That's great and all but when it comes to making the most money possible from selling video games, it seems Nintendo's plan is the best.
